NASCAR Cup Series: 2020 Round of 8 Update

Last week’s stage in the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, the Autotrader Echopark Automotive 500, had almost 72 hours of rain delays, with Kyle Busch finally winning his first race in 2020. This week, the scene shifts from Texas Motor Speedway to Martinsville on Sunday, for the Xfinity 500, with the broadcast coming at 2:00 pm Eastern time on NBC. Martin Truex Jr has emerged as an early favorite, given that he has won the last two races at Martinsville and could use the win to guarantee himself a slot in the Championship 4 for the November 8 finale at Phoenix Raceway.

As you plan your NASCAR betting for the Xfinity 500, check out the odds and our suggestions.

Denny Hamlin has won five times in his career at “The Paperclip” at Martinsville — but his last win came here in 2015. Since then, though, he has three top-five results in his last four races here. For his career, he has led 1,566 laps at Martinsville, second only among active drivers to Jimmie Johnson, who has 2,933. Hamlin came in ninth at Texas Motor Speedway and will have the fourth position on the grid for Sunday.

Brad Keselowski was the last driver not named Martin Truex Jr to win at Martinsville. In that win, he led in 446 of the 500 laps and won both stages. He has cracked the top five in four straight races at Martinsville and has been in the top ten in each of the last two races in the playoffs. He will have pole position going into Sunday’s race.

Ryan Blaney got knocked out of the first round of the playoffs but has still been charging hard. He came in fourth at Texas Motor Speedway, giving him four top-ten races in his last five starts. He led 45 laps at TMS and could do even more damage at Martinsville, which has been a kind track to him. In nine races, he has four top-five finishes, leading 179 laps combined during those races. He will start in tenth place on Sunday.

Martin Truex Jr is the favorite, so he doesn’t offer a lot of value, but his track record at Martinsville still makes him a smart pick. In his last six races at this track, his worst finish has been eighth place. He was also the runner-up at Texas Motor Speedway.

Joey Logano has 11 top-ten finishes in his last 15 races. He won the Xfinity 500 in 2018 and came in fourth in the earlier trip to Martinsville in 2020. In six of last eight races overall, he has not finished worse than ninth.

Jimmie Johnson offers a ton of value as he winds down his full-time NASCAR Cup Series career. He has not even cracked the top ten since the Drydene 311. There was a time, though, when Johnson absolutely crushed the competition at The Paperclip. He is a six-time winner of this race, and there’s something to be said about turning back the clock. Only consider Johnson if you’re looking to put down some money on one of the longest of longshots, though.
