Nick Sanchez transcended a chaotic overtime to take first in the Fresh from Florida 250 at Daytona International Speedway last Friday. This was Sanchez’s first career victory in the Craftsman Truck Series; he and runner-up Corey Heim were able to stay clear of the damage that resulted from Rajah Caruth turning Jack Wood. Caruth also escaped significant damage and took third place. However, Daniel Dye sent Taylor Gray’s Toyota up into the air; Gray’s vehicle flipped but still landed upright. The wreck involved a dozen trucks, causing the 12th caution of the night, a series record. Of the 101 laps, 51 were run under caution, and the wrecks started early as Christian Eckes sent Matt Crafton into Layne Riggs on just the sixth lap of the night, starting a 13-truck pileup that ended the nights of Ty Dillon, Jake Carcia, and Thad Moffitt. Looking ahead, Saturday features the Fr8 208 from Atlanta Motor Speedway. The trucks will start at 2:00 pm Eastern time, and you can watch the race on FS1 or listen on Motor Racing Network. 2024 NASCAR Truck Series Betting Analysis: Fr8 208 Preview and Odds to Win for the Top 10 Drivers
Rajah Caruth started in 20th at the Fresh from Florida 250 and made is way all the way up to second place, even leading for a lap. His average position was 16.3, and his best lap was #56, which only lasted 47.5 seconds. In 2023, he finished 16th in the Truck Series, posting 482 points in 23 starts (including three DNFs). He did not crack the top ten at all last year, so he is already ahead of 2023 in that metric. He only led one lap (of 3,141 total) all last season, so it’s all uphill from here.
Timmy Hill ended up in eighth place last week, starting in 33rd but taking advantage of all of the wreckage to slide up 25 slots. His average position was 23.1, so most of his opportunism happened late in the race. His best lap was #93 (47.7 seconds), and he was only 13.4 seconds behind Sanchez at the end. In 2023, he finished 25th in the Truck Series, gathering 222 points over 14 starts. He also went a whole season without a top-ten finish, so he’s already ahead of himself to start 2024.
Taylor Gray may still have his head spinning from the finish last week, but he still ended up finishing 19th, averaging a position of 7.9 before that late wreck sent his truck up into the air. His best lap was #55 (47.8 seconds). In 2023, he posted 490 points in 20 starts (with one DNF). He did not have a top-ten finish in 2023, but he did have an average finish of 15th, suggesting some consistency – and some room for improvement.
Christian Eckes took tenth last week, moving up 15 slots from 25th place, where he started. He led one lap and held an average position of 11.3. He had two of the fastest laps, and his best was #56 (47.6 seconds). He ended up 17.1 seconds behind Sanchez. In 2023, Eckes came in fifth in the Truck Series, posting 2,319 points in 23 starts (with three DNFs). He won two stages on the year, and he led 351 of a total of 3,201 laps, third in the series. Finishing races is still a priority for him as he averaged 11th place over the season.
