Last weekend, Shane van Gisbergen showed that he will be a force to deal with in NASCAR, particularly on road courses, as he cruised to victory in the Pacific Office Automation 147 at Portland International Raceway. The New Zealander even finished off his win by sending a soccer ball up into the crowd. He had to fight through problems with early restarts, where he lost positions. Even so, he was able to zip ahead in the final laps to get the win. He passed Justin Allgaier, who led 46 of the 75 laps, with four laps remaining on the last restart and beat him by 9.941 seconds. The rest of the top five were Sam Mayer, road course expert AJ Allmendinger (who started the race in last), and Ed Jones, who also has IndyCar racing experience. This made two straight runner-up finishes here for Allgaier, despite the fact that he led the field by as many as three seconds at some points. The pair of cautions in the last 12 laps basically eliminated his advantage. Allgaier won both stages, now holding a six-stage winning streak, a Xfinity Series record. He has also won 10 stages in the first 13 races, the most ever at this point in a Xfinity Series season. This week, the NASCAR Xfinity Series heads down to Sonoma Raceway in California for the Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250. The event will run 79 laps and is set for 8:00 pm Eastern time on Saturday, June 8. The NASCAR circuit at Sonoma Raceway runs 1.99 miles. It features a dozen turns, and renovations over the years have added features to make the racing more exciting. For example, “The Chute” was added in 1998 – an 890-foot stretch made for speed between Turns 4 and 7. The pit road was too short for all the cars to fit in the main area, which could only hold 34 stalls. An auxiliary pit area, called “Gilligan’s Island,” was set up inside Turn 11 for the other cars. That road was much shorter, so cars were held 15–20 seconds to make up for the difference. Also, crews stationed out there could not get back to the garage area or to their own transporters to get extra tools or parts. In 2002, a new, expanded pit area was created, ending Gilligan’s Island. In February 2024, the repavement of the course was finished, and this could lead to record-setting speed from all the racers this weekend.

Should you back Shane van Gisbergen again? After all, he won his NASCAR Cup Series debut on the inaugural Chicago street race last year. Last week, he ran a highly flawed race in Portland, but still came away with the victory. In qualification, van Gisbergen earned the second-place starting position behind Sam Mayer, who was on the pole. Van Gisbergen collided with Mayer on the first turn and went into a spin (for which van Gisbergen apologized at the end). Even with all of those problems, the rookie was able to deliver the win.

AJ Allmendinger might have something to say, though. He crashed in his qualifying run at Portland and had to drive a backup car. Even though that pushed him to the back of the starting grid, he was able to work his way up to a fourth-place finish. Allmendinger is a road-course specialist who will also be right there at the end this week.
