Betting Preview
Tim Tszyu ($1.41) vs Jeff Horn ($2.50) gives us a 15-0 unbeaten pro fighter in Tszyu. Of those wins, 11 have come via knockout. His most recent fight came in December, when he knocked out Jack Brubaker in the fourth round. He faces an upgrade in talent in Horn, who beat Michael Zerafa and has even beaten Manny Pacquiao.
One factor about Horn is that his style is unorthodox, and he brings blows from angles that his opponents do not expect. He also brings his elbows and his head into the contest. His most recent fight came against Zerafa in December, in a rematch. Zerafa had knocked Horn out in the ninth round of their first fight, and so Horn responded in the rematch by starting aggressively, keeping Zerafa from developing a sense of comfort in his own space before moving forward. Some describe Horn’s style as that of a “drunk” or a “playground bully,” which might sound like they are questioning his technical skills but instead are paying homage to the chaos that his constant pressure brings to opponents.
If you like Tszyu, then you think that he can work his way around Horn’s disorder in the early going and then come through the storm and amass enough points to win on the cards. The key will be whether Tszyu can keep Horn far enough away from him to avoid the sort of damage that could lead to an early finish. If he can maintain his space and turn the fight in his direction, then he should be able to land the punches. Given his pedigree, he has the skills to do that.
The issue is that Tszyu has not taken on a fighter of Horn’s skill level and power before. That transition is difficult to train for the first time, and so Tszyu has a war on his hands for the first few rounds.
Given this new level of exposure, and given the disparity in value, I like Horn here. I think he brings enough of a storm to rattle Tszyu and push to the knockout. Tszyu might well learn lessons from this fight and win the rematch, but I’m going with horn here.
