Can Munguia Shock the World? Boxing Betting Odds and Preview for Canelo vs. Munguia

All eyes in the world of boxing are on Las Vegas this weekend as Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KO) prepares to defend his undisputed super middleweight championship belt against Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KO) at T-Mobile Arena. Their fight at the top of the card is set for 8:00 pm ET on Saturday, and Prime Video Pay Per View will carry the telecast. Canelo is currently ranked at No. 4 on ESPN’s pound-for-pound boxer list, and his trilogy with GGG has been one of the epic stories of the sport. The public have asked for a fight with David Benavidez, who currently sits in second place in ESPN’s super middleweight rankings. However, he is instead fighting the 4th-ranked fighter in his classification as a -525 favorite. The 12-round fight is at the top of a card that actually features four title fights. Let’s look at a couple of these fights as you plan your Boxing betting for the weekend.

Boxing Betting Canelo vs. Munguia: Preview for a Potential Fireworks Fight

Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia

Canelo vs Munguia gives us the face of boxing against a 27-year-old who has already notched 43 professional fights. Munguia has taken on some tough opposition but has not met anything like Canelo, who has world championships in four divisions. Munguia has some flaws that Canelo can exploit, such as some glaring holes in his defense. Munguia demolished John Ryder in January, but Ryder was able to do damage with counter right hooks when Munguia would follow up punches by dropping his hands and keeping his head still. Ryder just lacked the power to put Munguia on his back. Canelo won’t have those problems.

Canelo has had a hard time against good jabbers such as GGG, Dmitry Bivol and Floyd Mayweather. Munguia has a solid jab and brings high-volume combinations afterward. His offense is his calling card, and he has three inches in hight on Canelo. Munguia needs to stay out of the pocket and keep the number of total punches down to avoid damage. Canelo needs to conserve his energy and speed so that the stamina issues that have dogged him in the past don’t come into play here. I see Canelo playing this smart enough to wait for his chance and then deliver the KO in one of the late rounds.

Boxing Betting Prediction: Canelo wins via KO

Mario Barrios vs Fabian Maidana

Barrios vs Maidana is Barrios’ chance to extend a winning streak that dates back to 2022 and take the belt. Barrios (28-2, 18 KO) stopped Yordenis Ugas in his last fight, using a stiff jab to send Ugas to the mat in the second round. Barrios did absorb some punishment from Ugas along the way, but he stayed up toe-to-toe and kept exchanging punches. Barrios has an edge in terms of speed and athleticism, so he should be able to deliver damage and then dance out of the way when it returns. Maidana (22-2, 16 KO) is three inches shorter than Barrios but has a two-inch advantage in reach, which is unusual. If Maidana can keep the jabs coming, he might be able to crack his defense and land bigger bombs as the fight progresses. If he can’t get those jabs in, though, he could suffer.

Boxing Betting Prediction: Barrios wins via decision
