Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs Toronto Argonauts in the Race for the Grey Cup – 2024 CFL Expert Analysis

CFL Odds & the 111th Grey Cup | If most of your exposure to American football comes from watching NFL and/or NCAA action, then the CFL might seem a little odd. The end zones are huge – 30 yards deep instead of 10.

The field has not one, but two 50-yard lines – and then that weird “C” between them – because their field is 110 yards long.

There’s also the fact that you can have multiple players in motion at the snap – and that they can be moving toward the line of scrimmage when the play begins.

Then there’s the fact that you only get three downs to move 10 yards. Most of the differences are designed to open the game up and make it more of a pass-centered offense.

One CFL rule that the American game could learn from is the fact that any call on the field can be subject to review, including missed penalties.

CFL Odds: All About the Grey Cup | Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs Toronto Argonauts 2024 Season

The CFL season takes place from the late spring to the early fall, and their championship game is called the Grey Cup (or the Coupe Grey, for those who live in Quebec).

It takes place on the third Sunday in November, and it’s a far older tradition than the NFL’s Super Bowl, dating back to 1909.

Last year, Montreal defeated Winnipeg, 28-24, to win the 110th Grey Cup.

This year, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are back, but this time they will face the Toronto Argonauts on Sunday, November 17.

Read on to learn more about the storied game and to get our thoughts for those of you considering including this matchup in your sports betting.

If you live in the United States, the CBS Sports Network will carry the Grey Cup, which is set for BC Place Stadium in Vancouver this season. If you don’t live in Canada or the United States, then you can stream the game on CFL+. Inside Canada, though, this is the biggest yearly television and sports event that the nation holds, with about 4 million Canadians tuning in each year.

CFL Odds for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers

This time around, the Blue Bombers are favored to win by 6 ½ points. They came into 2024 as +200 favorites to hoist the Cup, and their moneyline now sits at -350.

Toronto isn’t intimidated by being an underdog, though – they were two-point underdogs against Montreal in the East Division Final, but still won, 30-28.

However, they lost starting quarterback Chad Kelly with a broken ankle.

That means that Nick Arbuckle will get the start. Winnipeg ran over Saskatchewan in the West Division Final, 38-22. Zach Collaros threw for 301 yards and four scores, and tailback Brady Oliveira ran for 119 yards and a score.

Kenny Lawler was the standout receiver, recording six catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns. Without Kelly, it’s tough to back the Argonauts against the Blue Bombers.

Grey Cup History

The trophy, named after The Earl Grey, Canada’s governor-general in 1909, was commissioned for the senior amateur hockey championship but was overshadowed by the earlier-donated Allan Cup.

So instead he donated it to the Canadian Dominion Football Championship winner.

Much like the Stanley Cup, the Grey Cup has a cup connected to a big base that has every winning team, player and executive engraved on it.

The trophy has had a bumpy ride – it’s been broken a few times and has even been stolen twice and held for ransom.

In 1947, it was in a building fire that destroyed a lot of other artifacts, but it survived.

The Mud Bowl

Canadian weather can get interesting once the calendar turns to November and December. In 1950, the infamous “Mud Bowl” saw one player almost drown in a puddle.

In 1962, the “Fog Bowl” was interrupted due to a heavy fog that forced the postponement of the last minutes of the contest until the next day.

NFL’s “Ice Bowl” was in 1967; CFL’s similar event occurred in 1977 at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium with ice-covered turf.

Snow is rare at the Grey Cup, with the last occurrence in 2017. The CFL briefly expanded into the U.S., where the Baltimore Stallions won the 1995 Grey Cup, the only non-Canadian team to do so.
