Tour de France 2024: Can Anyone Stop Pogacar? A Look at the Odds to Win the Yellow Jersey

After nine stages, the 2024 Tour de France appears to be down to a two-man battle between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard.

Currently, Pogacar has the lead (and is the fairly heavy betting favorite on most books), up a minute and 15 seconds on Vingegaard, who is working on a three-peat.

Remco Evenepoel is in second, 33 seconds behind Pogacar, but he is not seen as a serious contender across the remaining stages.

The mountain stages are yet to come, with most of the Alpine stages still remaining and the entire portion of the race that takes place in the Pyrenees.

Pogacar gained most of his time advantage in the race on the descent from the Galibier, on the only mountain day, but last week, Vingegaard used the last week of the Tour – also a series of mountain days – to catch and pass Pogacar by a sizable margin.

Check out the latest sports betting odds for the remaining contenders to win the General Classification race – and finish with the yellow jersey.

Anthony Turgis

Stage 9 involved 14 gravel sections and eventually went to Turgis, who won a breakaway sprint.

Pogacar put on multiple attacks through the gravel portions in an attempt to pad his own lead.

Within the first 50 kilometers of a stage that lasted almost 200, Turgis joined a group of 12 riders that left the peloton behind.

However, by the time they reached the flamme rouge (the marker showing riders that 1 kilometer remains in the stage), that group caught up with breakaway attacker Jasper Stuyven and then sprinted to get the stage win.

Ben Healy led that last group through the final meters until Derek Gee broke into a sprint.

Turgis and Tom Pidcock both jumped into the fray, and Turgis took first, with Pidcock right behind him and Gee settling for third.

In fact, only seven of the 12 breakaway riders ended up finishing with that top group.

In addition to those top three and Stuyven, Alex Aranburu, Javier Romo and Alexey Lutsenko kept the pace.

Tadej Pogacar & Remco Evenepoel

Both Pogacar and Evenepoel made some significant attacks as well. Even so, Vingegaard was able to hold pace, and the top ten ended up making just insignificant changes.

This groups all crossed together 1:46 after the breakaway group, even though they battled together through the last half of the race and in all 14 of the gravel sectors.

Pogacar noted, in a post-stage interview, that he would have set up the loop in the opposite direction to provide a tailwind to the finish.

After four categorized climbs and those 14 gravel sections (most of them in the last half of the stage), the riders have earned a Monday rest day.

Tour de France Betting Stage 10

This is set for Tuesday, will be another event for the sprinters, with a lot of flat roads.

The last 60 kilometers are exposed, though, which means that crosswinds could play a significant factor.

Mark Cavendish could end up winning another stage in this Tour (and a record 36th for his career). Biniam Girnay and Dylan Groenewegen are two other impressive sprinters.

Girmay currently holds the green jersey (for the top sprinter) and has won two stages already.

One sprinter who is less promising is Jasper Philipsen, who controlled the sprints in 2023 but has not had that kick in the Tour this time around.
