eSports Betting: Overwatch League Preview May 10 Matches

Written by on May 7, 2020

Overwatch is one of the multiplayer team-based first-person shooter video games that has become part of the professional e-sports leagues. Teams of six square off, with the goal of attacking each other or accomplishing a particular objective. Each player chooses one of the 30 available heroes to serve as an avatar. Some heroes serve as Damage characters (primary attackers), Support (bringing healing and other bonuses to the Damage characters) and Tank characters (using high health totals to protect other teammates). If you are considering adding online betting on the Overwatch League action from this coming weekend, take a look at our preview of Sunday’s matches.

Hangzhou Spark (5.5) vs Shanghai Dragons (1.12) (4:00 am ET)

Hangzhou Spark is well down the table from Shanghai Dragons this season, but they have won two of the five meetings between the teams. However, Shanghai has won the last three meetings in a row.

Hangzhou has a two-match winning streak going, having beaten the Chengdu Hunters and the Seoul Dynasty. However, the last time they faced the Shanghai Dragons, on April 18, they received a 3-0 beating. Shanghai has not lost in their last five matches; they had a four-sweep streak going until they needed the full five games to beat New York Excelsior on May 2.

Prediction: Shanghai Dragons win

London Spitfire (3.46) vs Guangzhou Charge (1.27) (6:00 am ET)

These teams have met just once, with the London Spitfire walking away with the win in Stage 4 of the 2019 Overwatch League.

London has not played since March 1, but they had a three-match winning streak going then, with wins over Washington, Houston and Florida. The Guangzhou Charge beat Seoul Dynasty on May 2 but had lost two in a row before that. It seems that London is an underdog in large part because of the gap between games, instead of anything to do with their record, so I’m taking the value they offer.

Prediction: London Spitfire wins

Dallas Fuel (3.72) vs Philadelphia Fusion (1.24) (3:00 pm ET)

Dallas and Philadelphia have squared off five times, with the Fuel winning two of those matchups — the two most recent ones, in fact, although their last tilt came on February 23, 2019. This year, though, Philadelphia is having a vastly superior season.

Dallas has turned up the heat, starting off 0-3 but then winning four of five to bring their record to 4-4. Their last two matches have been wins, with Houston and Washington falling as their latest victims. Philadelphia is 10-1, with their lone loss coming on April 5 against Washington. Since then, though, they have gotten back to their winning ways, reeling off four straight victories, two over Paris Eternal and two over the Atlanta Reign. I like Dallas’ momentum, and I also like the added value they offer.

Prediction: Dallas Fuel wins

Toronto Defiant (6.93) vs San Francisco Shock (1.07) (5:00 pm ET)

San Francisco has met Toronto twice in the past, winning both matchups. Those both came in emphatic fashion, with a 6-0 win in the 2019 Stage 1 playoffs and a 4-0 win in Stage 2 play of the 2019 Overwatch League.

Toronto has won three of their last five matches, although they fell to the Los Angeles Gladiators in their last action on May 3. The San Francisco Shock have won five matches in a row, dropping just three games along the way. That sort of momentum should lead to a Shock win, even though they don’t offer much in the way of betting value.

Prediction: San Francisco Shock wins

Florida Mayhem (NL) vs Vancouver Titans (NL) (7:00 pm ET)

Vancouver has won the only matchup between these two teams, completing a 4-0 sweep of the Mayhem in Stage 4 of the 2019 Overwatch League.

Florida rolls in on a three-match winning streak, having swept Paris Eternal once and the Boston Uprising twice (although Boston has a 1-9 record, so that’s not all that impressive). Vancouver has won three of their last five but fell, 3-1, to Chengdu Hunters on April 12. I’d wait for a line to emerge before committing on this match. Vancouver has dumped their entire roster, which is why the line is on hold.
