Overwatch is one of the multiplayer team-based first-person shooter video games that has become part of the professional e-sports leagues. Teams of six square off, with the goal of attacking each other or accomplishing a particular objective. Each player chooses one of the 30 available heroes to serve as an avatar. Some heroes serve as Damage characters (primary attackers), Support (bringing healing and other bonuses to the Damage characters) and Tank characters (using high health totals to protect other teammates). Shanghai Dragons (1.12) vs Seoul Dynasty (5.5) (4:00 am ET)
The odds here are interesting given that Seoul Dynasty has won six of the eight prior matchups between the two teams. The teams have split the last four matchups, with the Shanghai Dragons delivering a 3-0 sweep of the Seoul Dynasty on April 26.
Shanghai comes in having won five matches in a row, four of those in 3-0 fashion. Seoul Dynasty has taken a bit of a dip, getting swept in three straight losses, two of those to the Guangzhou Charge and the Hangzhou Spark, two of the middle-tier teams in the league. Given those trends, it’s hard to argue against the Shanghai Dragons.
Prediction: Shanghai Dragons win
Chengu Hunters (1.534) vs London Spitfire (2.372) (6:00 am ET)
These two teams have only met once, with Chengdu Hunters taking the win in Stage 2 of the 2019 Overwatch League.
Chengdu Hunters have lost four matches in a row, falling to Shanghai Dragons, New York Excelsior twice, and Hangzhou Spark. London Spitfire has a three-match winning streak, taking down Washington Justice, Houston Outlaws and Florida Mayhem, but it is worth pointing out that they have not had a match since March 1, so there may be some rust. Even so, given London’s solid performance before their pause, I’m taking their added value here.
Prediction: London Spitfire win
Guangzhou Charge (4.52) vs New York Excelsior (1.12) (8:00 am ET)
These two teams have met twice, with each side winning one match apiece. New York Excelsior won their matchup on April 26 as part of Overwatch League play.
Guangzhou Charge continues to struggle to find consistency, as they have gone 2-2 in their last four matches. They did sweep Seoul Dynasty on May 2, but before that they took 3-0 beatings from New York Excelsior and Shanghai Dragons. New York has gone 3-2 in their last five matches, with the only surprise loss coming to the Atlanta Reign. Even with this disparity in value, the smart pick is the Excelsior.
Prediction: New York Excelsior win
Paris Eternal (2.212) vs Los Angeles Gladiators (1.610) (3:00 pm ET)
Paris Eternal and the L.A. Gladiators have met just once, and that match ended in a 1-1 draw in Stage 1 of the 2019 Overwatch League. Both of these teams have hovered around the .500 mark for the season.
Paris Eternal has won just twice in their last five matches and have dropped three in a row, including a pair to the Philadelphia Fusion and a match to the Florida Mayhem. The Gladiators roll in on a two-match winning streak, having beaten the crosstown Valiant and the Toronto Defiant. They have won three of their last five overall.
Prediction: Los Angeles Gladiators win
Washington Justice (NL) vs Vancouver Titans (NL) (5:00 pm ET)
These clubs have met once time, with Washington taking the win in a 4-0 sweep in Stage 4 of the 2019 Overwatch League. However, the Washington Justice has struggled mightily this season, with one win in their last five matches and just a 2-9 record overall.
Washington last won on April 5, when they beat the Philadelphia Fusion. Since then, they have lost to the Dallas Fuel twice, with a loss to the Atlanta Reign sandwiched in between. Vancouver hasn’t done much better, dropping two in a row and three of five. Their losses have come against the Guangzhou Charge and the Chengdu Hunters, neither of which is a real contender. Once lines are posted, I’ll take the underdog given the fact that neither team emerges as the likelier choice.
Prediction: Take the underdog once lines become available
Houston Outlaws (3.72) vs Atlanta Reign (1.24) (7:00 pm ET)
Houston and Atlanta have met twice, with the Reign taking both of those matches in 3-1 fashion, once in Stage 1 and the other in Stage 4 of the 2019 Overwatch League.
The Outlaws have dropped two in a row and three of five, losing to the Dallas Fuel and the San Francisco Shock in their last two matches. Atlanta has also dropped two in a row and three of five, losing to the Los Angeles Valiant and the Philadelphia Fusion in their last two matches. Given the similarity in recent trends, I’m going with the higher value.
Prediction: Houston Outlaws win
Los Angeles Valiant (1.16) vs Boston Uprising (4.5) (9:00 pm ET)
The Valiant and the Uprising have tangled five times overall, with Boston winning three of those matchups. However, the Valiant have won the last two, in 2018 and 2019 matchups in Overwatch League.
The Valiant have dropped four of five, although they did beat the Atlanta Reign their last time out. Boston, though, has just one win all season and have no wins in their last five encounters.
Prediction: Los Angeles Valiant win
