You don’t expect a course used to host one of the majors to be particularly easy, but Chambers Bay, site of this year’s US Open may prove to be tougher than most. It’s a links style course that looks as though it may have been plucked from Ireland or Scotland. What’s all the more remarkable is that it’s a relatively new course, constructed on the site of what was a former mining pit. This is a sandy course with rolling greens that are sure to drive the pros absolutely nuts. With that in mind, there aren’t many golf betting fans who believe that it won’t take a particularly low score to get the win.
As is always the case with any major tournament, the best players in the world are getting set to bring their A-game to Washington this weekend. There are some great story-lines getting set to play out, and you can bet that all eyes will be on Tiger Woods to see how well he recovers from his disastrous performance at the Memorial recently. Martin Kaymer from Germany will be in town to try and defend the title he won at Pinehurst last year, while world number 1 Rory McIlroy will be trying to recover his form, whilst also trying to hold off Jordan Spieth, who is breathing down his neck in second. This is also the one tournament that has eluded Phil Mickelson, and he will be trying once again to complete the career Grand Slam.
This is a course that may make the golfers feel a little comfortable after the first hole. The Puget Sound hole can be played as either a Par 4 or 5, and is one that should be easily managed by the pros. It’s all downhill from there, though, and those who struggle with a links style course usually found at the British Open will find that things become a whole lot more difficult from that point forward. The rain is supposed to stay away this weekend, which will mean that the fescue grass on the fairways should remain firm, allowing bigger hitters to add some length to their drives.
One thing that could pose a problem is the coastal winds blowing in off Puget Sound. These tend to be on the unpredictable side, and could wreak havoc if the wind gets up. We will talk later in the week about which golfers might be able to handle this course, and which ones might represent a decent bet before the weekend begins.
