2019 Farmers Insurance Open Odds & Betting Preview

The PGA Tour will remain in California for another week, as the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open is set for this weekend. There is a stronger field than usual in 2019, as Rickie Fowler and Tiger Woods will be making their 2019 debuts. Rory McIlroy will compete here for the first time, as will Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Justin Rose and Jon Rahm. This tournament does take place in the hometown of Phil Mickelson, who tied for second at the CareerBuilder Challenge last week, but he will not appear in the Farmers Insurance Open. This tournament takes place on the Torrey Pines South and North Courses. The South course plays at 7,698 yards, with six par-4s that are at least 450 yards. The North course extends 7,250 yards and is somewhat more accessible, as it ranks third on the Tour in terms of Eagle Rate and yielded 12 eagles in 2018, even after the renovation, in 156 rounds played. Jon Rahm offers some value despite being the top favorite. He put together a -21 tournament a week ago and has put together a combined -48 score over his last three tournaments. Rahm won this tournament two years ago and has said on multiple occasions that Torrey Pines is one of his favorite venues. So despite the fact that he’s at the top of the odds list, he’s someone to bet on. Tiger Woods hasn’t played in a tournament since the Hero World Challenge, which means that some rust is likely — but we saw last year that Woods can shake the rust off. He has seven victories at the Farmers Insurance Open and has won here in six of his last 12 outings. The value that Woods offers on this odds sheet has to do with the lack of recent tournament action in Woods’ game, but we saw last year that he is ready to get back to contending on Sundays. Patrick Cantlay has a California background and still lives in Los Alamitos. In his last two tournaments, he has finished a combined -38 and has finished in the top 10 in four straight tournaments. It’s true that Cantlay came in 51st at this event in 2018 and missed the cut entirely in 2013, but recent form makes him an interesting dark horse pick. Hideki Matsuyama has made every cut since the British Open and put up a -6 at the Sony Open. In his last five Farmers Insurance Opens, Matsuyama has made the cut three times and has averaged a top-20 finish in those three tournaments. He finished 12th here in 2018, his best result in his career to this point. The odds here represent significant value for someone who is much higher in the power rankings. Xander Schauffele has appeared in three Farmers Insurance Opens — and missed the cut each time. However, he won at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and WGC-HSBC Champions, so his form is terrific this year. He has three wins in his last four tournaments and seven top-25 finishes in his last eight starts. He is from the San Diego area, so he’s familiar with the climate and surroundings. The value that he brings is worth adding him to your wager card.
