Now that Tiger Woods has won his fifth Masters and has, after a long layoff, resumed his chase of Jack Nicklaus for the record of 18 major titles, what can golf bring next? This week we have the RBC Heritage, one of the four events separating the Masters from the PGA Championship, moved to the spring this year. There are just 132 golfers at the RBC Heritage, set for Harbour Town Golf Links starting Thursday. The course runs about 7,100 yards as a par 1. There are trees lining just about all of the fairways, which means you’ll see a lot more irons off the tees instead of drivers. Even when drives land in the fairway, the lie can put players under overhanging trees, with few options to get to the green. And the greens aren’t easy either, averaging just about 3,700 square feet, making them the smallest ones on the whole PGA TOUR. Dustin Johnson doesn’t offer a whole lot of value, but he’s right on. He was the runner-up at Augusta and has six top-ten finishes in his last eight tournaments. He grew up in South Carolina and attended university at Coastal Carolina. He has talked in the past about how Harbour Town Golf Links is a great course for his game. He’s the favorite, and we can see why.
Bryson DeChambeau has been scuffling a bit lately, only cracking the top 25 once in his last five tournaments. However, at the RBC Heritage, he has two top-five finishes in three career starts, and he also has mentioned in press conferences how much he likes this course. He offers some value here, so I would take advantage of it.
Kevin Kisner has made it into the top 25 in five straight tournaments, including a win at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, his third career win on the PGA Tour. He is also from South Carolina, so he knows the course, and he came in second here four years ago. He has made the cut at RBC Heritage five consecutive years and also finishes seventh in 2018. Could he get two wins in the same year?
Jim Furyk took the Masters off, so he has some rest on his legs. He has eight top-25 finishes in his last 11 tournaments, and he is one of 10 golfers with at least two wins at RBC Heritage, winning in 2010 and 2015. He has played this tournament 19 times and has made the cut 15 of those, and he has two runner-up trophies from 2005 and 2006. He has eight top-10 finishes in his last 11 starts here when he has made the cut. Take advantage of that value.
Matt Kuchar posted a -8 for the Masters and has three consecutive top-15 finishes. He has made the cut 13 consecutive times at RBC Heritage, and he roared back on Sunday to beat Luke Donald here five years ago.
