We move another week into the 2019-20 PGA Tour campaign at the Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course, in Napa, California, the site of this week’s 2019 Safeway Open. Now that more time has passed since the PGA Championship and the end of the 2018-19 season, we are seeing more of the top tier of players showing up for tournaments. Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama will take part this week, along with Phil Mickelson, Collin Morikawa and Francesco Molinari. Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will also join the field as part of a sponsor’s exemption (at 10,000/1 odds for the win). The Course
The course this week is almost 7,200 yards in length and will play as a par 72. The greens will have poa annua as a surface. This was one of the easier courses in 2018, coming in 29th of 49 in terms of scoring relative to par. The course ranked tenth in the most birdies that a course permitted in the 2018-19 season. Almost half of the birdies at this tournament a year ago came on par 5s, so you will want to consider golfers with a solid par 5 scoring average as you place your wagers. Strokes Gained: Approach the Green was a helpful stat in 2018; four of the top five golfers in that stat in the Safeway Open field last year also cracked the top five for the weekend.
Chez Reavie
Reavie is in the top 20 in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green over his last three tournaments, as well as second in fairways hit. His weakness here is slightly worse par-5 scoring than Justin Thomas and other contenders. However, he is fourth in overall proximity to the hole in his last three tournaments. Reavie enjoys putting on the poa grass; in the field, he is second in putting on this surface.
Bronson Burgoon
Burgoon has tied for 19th and tied for sixth so far in the fall portion of the season. In his last three tournaments, he is 23rd in fairways hit over the last three tournaments and 26th in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green. He had a solid Sunday at the Sanderson Farm Championship, posting a -7 on the tournament’s last day. Last year at the Safeway Open, Burgoon cracked the top 20.
Byeong Hun An
Hun An is one of the top players on the PGA Tour who still has not won a tournament. He finished as runner-up twice in 2018 and came in third at a couple of tournaments in the last two months that he could easily have won, including the Sanderson Farms Championship where he led for much of the way but saw the lead slip away on Sunday. His biggest improvement lately has come on the greens, but last week he gained 4.3 strokes through putting.
Bud Cauley
Cauley came in 14th at Greenbrier a few weeks back, thanks to a terrific putting week, but overall his game seems to have a strong foundation. There are better strikers, but his game does not have a serious flaw, which helps when it is time to gain strokes. He came in seventh at the Safeway Open two years ago, and he could pull off a win — and bring in some value for bettors.
