2019 Wyndham Championship Odds & Preview

Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina is the site for this week’s stop on the PGA Tour: the 2019 Wyndham Championship. This is the last tournament where players can pick up points to affect their standings in the FedExCup Playoffs, as well as the last tournament where players can pick up Wyndham Rewards Top 10 points, leading to a cash bonus at the end of the regular season. There are a number of elite players taking this week off after playing in The Open Championship and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, but such players as Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama and Webb Simpson will be in North Carolina, along with defending tournament championship Brandt Snedeker. Sedgefield Country Club has eight par 4s that run between 400 and 450 yards, along with two par 5s that the whole field can reach — last year, those two holes yielded 70 total eagles. The top five finishers last year benefited most from their ability to gain strokes in approach of the green (more than one per round) than from gaining strokes off the tee or around the green. The fairways get a lot narrower once you get 275 yards off the tee, which means that driving accuracy is crucial here as well.

Jordan Spieth

Spieth put together a strong performance at the WGC-Fed Ex St Jude Invitational last week, finishing at -6 for the tournament, giving him five top-25 finishes in his last seven tournaments. In 2013, Spieth was the runner-up to Patrick Reed here, losing in a playoff. Spieth appears more relaxed and comfortable with his game than he has in a while, and he offers some decent value here.

Webb Simpson

Simpson has finished as the runner-up twice in his last four tournaments, including last week at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He is peaking at an opportune time, and he has four top-six finishes in his last five starts at this tournament, and he has made nine straight cuts here. He took home the winner’s trophy eight years ago. It is not often that Simpson is a tournament favorite, but he is deservedly so here.

Lucas Glover

Glover has cracked the top 25 in three straight events, and in the last 18 tournaments in which he has made the cut, he has 16 top-15 finishes. He has an average round score of 68.4 in 14 Wyndham Championship appearances, making 12 cuts. The value on him is significant given his track record, both recently and at this tournament.

Scott Piercy

Piercy is another potential sleeper. He has made the cut in each of his last fours tarts at the Wyndham Championship, with top-15 finishes coming in 2010 and in 2014. He has finished inside the top 20 in five of the last seven tournaments in which he made the cut.

Cameron Smith

Smith also posted an impressive -6 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational last week, and he came in seventh at the 2018 Wyndham Championship. Smith had gone through a lengthy drought, missing multiple cuts, but his game appears to be rounding back into form just in time for this week.
