The PGA Tour moves to Mamaroneck, New York, for the 2020 U.S. Open from Winged Foot Golf Club. This marks the second major in five weeks, as the PGA Championship took place at Harding Park in August, with Collin Morikawa pulling off a breathtaking win on the tournament’s last day. Winged Foot Golf Club will run 7,469 yards and play as a par-70 for the golfers this weekend. Historically, this has been a challenging course for the Open. In 1974, Hale Irwin won the tournament with a 7-over score, and in 2006, Geoff Ogilvy won with a 5-over mark. The keys for success include driving distance, but the rough is thick from tee to green, which means that accuracy is also essential. Check out the total driving statistic, which comes from combining a player’s ranking in accuracy and distance off the tee. Long-iron efficiency will also play a role, as golfers will find the rough to be five inches thick in some spots.

Xander Schauffele has a lot of elements of his golf game that seem to fit this tournament. Over his last five tournaments, his play has gained him 6.1 strokes overall against the field. He came in 13th at the Memorial and 25th at Olympia Fields, and he has not finished outside the top 25 since June.

Patrick Cantlay has not broken the top ten since July, at the Workday Charity Open. However, he tends to play better with improved talent around him, and with increased difficulty on the course. In his last 50 rounds on a course with tough scoring conditions, he is first in this field in par 4 efficiency, 13th in scrambling, second in proximity (125 to 150 yards) and fourth off the tee. His iron play was disappointing at Olympia Fields, and he still came in 12th. In each of his U.S. Open appearances, he has improved his finish, coming in 21st in 2019 at Pebble Beach.

Patrick Reed ranks 24th in this field from tee to green since the sport restarted. Only three more golfers have gained more strikes in U.S. Open play since 2015, and he has already dealt with the pressure of winning a major at the Masters. He cracked the top 15 at the 2017 and 2018 editions of the U.S. Open.

Brendon Todd was a pleasant surprise in 2019, jumping from 63rd in the world to 39th. He is far from the longest driver in this field, but he is seventh in putting in this field since golf restarted. He ranks #1 in this field in fairways gained, which is a huge metric to have on your side here. He last appeared at a U.S. Open in 2014, when he tied for 17th.

Collin Morikawa had +5000 odds to win the U.S. Open before th PGA Championship. However, that big win at Harding Park has vaulted him up the odds list. He made a series of clutch shots that weekend, particularly on Sunday, so he has shown that he can deal with the pressure of golf’s biggest stages.
