2021 CJ Cup at the Summit : Golf Betting Preview

Written by on October 13, 2021

We’re into the fall swing of the PGA season, when the playoffs are done but some players use this time of year to add to their winnings and tinker with their games. The portion of the season based in Las Vegas enters its second week, as the CJ Cup is set for this weekend. This tournament used to take place in South Korea, but it moved to Nevada’s Shadow Creek last year due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Jason Kokrak is the defending champion, and the tournament remains in Las Vegas, consisting of 78 golfers without a cut. The field will include the top 60 from the 2020 FedEx points list as well as sponsor exemptions.

Let’s look at the PGA betting odds you can get on the field as well as some wager suggestions.

Justin Thomas won this race twice when it took place in South Korea, which makes him a natural favorite. Xander Schauffele has excelled in the past at no-cut events. Collin Morikawa won the British Open and is a member at the Summit Club. Jordan Spieth is taking part in his first tournament since the Ryder Cup. Of the four, Spieth makes the least sense, because despite his terrific play in 2021, the wins remain few and far between.

Going a bit down the odds list to find some value gems takes us to Louis Oosthuizen. He was the only player in the world rankings top 20 who did not win a tournament in 2021. He cracked the top five at three different majors and had a total of 11 top 25 finishes in 17 starts. He also has made every cut. He finished T14 a week ago, so it’s not like his game is slumping.

Looking for still more value takes us to Marc Leishman. In 2017, the tournament’s first year, Leishman took Justin Thomas to a playoff. He has six PGA Tour wins and has started the fall season extremely well, coming in fourth at the Fortinet Championship and third a week ago at the Shriners Children’s Open. Over these last two weeks, he is second among this field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Want a dark horse? Take a look at Harold Varner. In his first two starts of the fall season, he has come in 16th and 11th, and he is in the top ten in Strokes Gained: Putting and total Strokes Gained. He has never won a PGA tournament in the United States, but during this time of the year, when most of the elite players are relaxing at home, this could be his big opportunity.
