This year’s PGA Championship is set for May 19-22 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is a course that rewards the big hitters, as it runs 7,556 yards at a par 70. The two par-five holes are at least 630 yards, making strokes gained off the tee a vital metric when it comes to sports betting selections. Strokes gained approaching the green and one-putt percentage are also key, because the greens are small by PGA standards, and they are also compartmentalized, making approach shots and putts vital for getting below par. The biggest name not on the list this week is Phil Mickelson, who won last year’s PGA Championship at the age of 50, becoming the oldest player ever to win a major. Mickelson remains away from golf due to a controversy involving his comments about a new tour backed by the Saudi government that would rival the PGA Tour. Jon Rahm just won the Mexico Open, and he finished T4 at the 2018 PGA Championship. In his last four appearances at the PGA Championship, he has made the top 13 three times.
Scottie Scheffler won the Masters in April to get his first major, and he has been the best player in all of golf in 2022. He has never finished outside the top ten at a PGA Championship.
Justin Thomas has finished in the top ten six times since January. He won the 2017 PGA Championship and finished T6 in 2018. He has not done as well since then, with his best finish in the last three a T37 in 2020. He ranks top five in strokes gained off the tee, he is the best one-putter (46%) and he is in the top ten when it comes to scrambling from the rough. He ranks 27th in this field in strokes gained approaching the green, so he’s a solid pick despite the lack of value.
Tiger Woods made the cut at the Masters but then faltered on Saturday and Sunday. He continues to try to get back to form after recovering from that car crash in 2021 that led to severe leg injuries. Obviously, Tiger is always a factor when he enters a tournament, but he’s a long shot for a reason, as stamina, particularly walking such a long course for four days, will play a role.
Viktor Hovland came in T30 in 2021 at the PGA Championship – his best finish at this major. His best finish for any major is 12th, which is why he comes with more value. However, he is 12th in this field in strokes gained off the tee, in the top three in his approach game, and in the top five for scrambling from the rough. Hovland’s weakest key metric is his one-putt percentage (28%).
Shane Lowry finished in the top three at the Masters and has the game to excel on this course. He is in the top 20 in this field in scrambling from the rough, one-putt percentage and strokes gained approaching the green, so if he doesn’t win outright, he might be a solid pick for a top-ten prop.
Some other interesting long shots include Matt Fitzpatrick and Daniel Berger. Fitzpatrick has elite skills from tee to green but ranks just 47th in this field in one-putt percentage. Berger is in the top ten in strokes gained approaching the green and scrambling from the rough, but he does not do as well off the tee. If Fitzpatrick can turn things on with his putter and if Berger can hit bigger off the tee in the hot conditions, then either of these could contend.
