Golf The Open Championship Early Odds and Favorites

Royal Liverpool is the site for the 2023 Open Championship, and Rory McIlroy comes in as the favorite. McIlroy dashed the dreams of Scotsman Robert MacIntyre, who carded an unbelievable 64 on Sunday at the Scottish Open to take a late lead into the clubhouse. McIlroy birded 17 and 18 to win the tournament by a stroke. McIlroy also won the Open Championship the last time Royal Liverpool hosted it, back in 2014. He looked like he was headed for a win at St. Andrews last year but Cam Smith posted a huge Sunday, forcing McIlroy to settle for third place. Let’s look at some golf betting options a bit further down the odds list as you consider your weekend wagering.

Bryson DeChambeau

The Open Championship Odds: +6000

We really haven’t heard much from DeChambeau since he transformed his body to add muscle and push his tee shots close to 400 yards, only to find that he couldn’t hit them reliably straight, and then dropped the weight after the experiment didn’t pan out. Then he went off to LIV Golf, and the combination of having his rounds broadcast on the CW Network and remaining well under the radar at the majors where he was eligible means that DeChambeau may be looking to sneak up on the field like Brooks Koepka did a major ago. In his last five starts, DeChambeau has finished T11 (LIV Golf London), 2nd (LIV Golf Andalucia, T20 (U.S. Open), T9 (LIV Golf DC) and T4 (PGA Championship). That T4 was a quiet finish, but it tells us that he may be ready to sneak out and grab a win. It’s easy for inaccurate driving to get you in trouble at Royal Liverpool, though, so you might want to choose someone with a bit more driving accuracy.

Bet on Bryson DeChambeau!

Tom Kim

The Open Championship Odds: +6500

Tom Kim made his Open Championship debut last year at St Andrews, and his T47 tracks for a player new to the style of course in Scotland, where pot bunkers, crazy grass rough, gorsebushes and links-style holes await golfers who are used to significantly different layouts. He finished T6 at the Scottish Open last week, where the conditions are similar to what he can expect to find at Royal Liverpool this time around. He missed the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the Memorial, and he finished T38 at the Travelers Championship, but that T8 at the U.S. Open was impressive.

Robert MacIntyre

The Open Championship Odds: +8000

MacIntyre was heartbroken when McIlroy snatched a title in his home country’s national open away from him at the last second. Could he snatch that momentum back and take a huge win at Royal Liverpool? This will be MacIntyre’s fourth British Open; in his first three, he finished T6 (2019), T8 (2021) and T34 (2022). In addition to his runner-up finish last week, he has a T4 at Made in Himmerland, a T18 at the BMW International Open and a T39 at the British Masters. He also missed a cut at the Scandinavian Mixed. I wouldn’t be a ton of cash on MacIntyre, but his record in Open Championships and that Sunday round last week should have your attention this time around.

Bet on Robert MacIntyre!

Brian Harman

The Open Championship Odds: +9000

For a sleeper, Harman has some solid results lately. He finished T12 at the Scottish Open, T9 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and T2 at the Travelers Championship. He also msised the cut at the Memorial and finished T43 at the U.S. Open, but that’s still some promising recent play. At the British Open, he makes his sixth start after opening with three missed cuts (2017-2019). In 2021, he not only made the cut but finished T19, and last year he pushed all the way up to a T6 finish. So if you like a dark horse who can play on a Scottish course, Harman is an intriguing pick.
