PGA Tour 2022: The Masters Betting & Analysis

The 86th Masters is set to start on Thursday, and the biggest name jumping out from sports betting odds lists is Tiger Woods, who arrived at Augusta National last week to practice and prepare. He has not played at any regular PGA Tour event in over 500 days after a wreck in February 2021 that caused him severe injuries to his right foot and right leg. Woods has 15 major titles, including five green jackets for winning the Masters. Can he come back and play? How likely is he to make the cut without any competitive play, let alone win? Check out the Masters odds for the contenders, along with our suggestions for your wager cards.

Scottie Scheffler has three wins in his last five tournaments and has moved into the top slot in the PGA Tour rankings. Ian Woosnam was the last player to take the #1 slot and then make his next tournament start at a major, back in 1991, and he ended up winning the green jacket. Scheffler’s biggest problem is his driving accuracy (57.2%), which ranks him 134th, and Augusta National is unforgiving when it comes to errant tee shots.

Justin Thomas has cracked the top 25 in five straight Masters; in 2021, he finished T21, and he shot a 67 in the second round to move within three strokes of the lead but then went +4 over the last 36 holes. In nine starts this season, he has five finishes in the top ten.

Jon Rahm had his last win at the 2021 U.S. Open back in June, at Torrey Pines. In his last four tournaments at Augusta National, he has finished in the top ten each time, including a T5 last year. His problem right now is his short game, where he ranks 170th in shots gained around the green and shots gained putting.

Viktor Hovland is a terrific driver and has become an elite iron player. It’s around the green where he struggles, as he sits 209th in shots gained around the green. In 2019, though, he was the low amateur at Augusta National, finishing T32.

Collin Morikawa should take advantage if Augusta National really is a course where second shots make a difference. Morikawa led the PGA in shots gained: approach last season (1.17), and his 72.2% greens in regulation average is seventh. He won the PGA Championship in 2020 and the British Open in 2021 in his first appearance in those majors, and there’s nothing to suggest his game wouldn’t also be ideal for Augusta.

Looking for a dark horse? Matt Fitzpatrick is tops in the PGA Tour in shots gained: total (2.053) and ranks fourth in scoring average (69.72). He has eight starts so far this season, and his best finish has been a T5 at the Valspar Championship.

Abraham Ancer is only the fourth Mexican player ever to win a PGA Tour event, and in his two starts at Augusta National, he has made the cut both times and registered scores in the 60s in four of the eight rounds he has played.
