Golf Betting Odds and Analysis for 2023 PGA Wells Fargo Championship

Golf Betting Odds and Analysis for 2023 PGA Wells Fargo Championship

Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina is the host course for this week’s PGA Tour event: the Wells Fargo Championship. The course rewards distance, running 7,521 yards at par 71. The grass on the greens is back to Bermuda this week. This is one of the Tour’s elevated events, so we saw Rory McIlroy tee off for the first time since the Masters. After one round, Xander Schauffele is the current leader at -6. Four golfers are a stroke behind him, including longshots Kevin Streelman and K.H. Lee. McIlory is three shots back, and Tony Finau, who won the Mexico Open, is at even par, still within striking distance. We have the opening Golf betting odds for the contenders in the field, along with wager card suggestions.

Rory McIlroy

did miss the cut at Augusta, and he’s had some time off, so he should have plenty of motivation (and rest) to excel here. He won the CJ Cup in South Carolina and also won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour, but he has not yet rounded into top form for 2023. McIlroy leads the PGA Tour in driving distance, and this is a perfect course for a big driver. He is also tops in this field in Strokes Gained: Ball-Striking and Strokes Gained: Tee to Green over the last 24 rounds he’s played. At Quail Hollow Club, he has won three times (2010, 2015 and 2021) along with five other top-ten results since 2013. Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler are not playing this week, making McIlroy even a more attractive favorite. No, there’s not a lot of value, but he remains a smart pick, just three shots off the lead after Thursday.

Tommy Fleetwood

has made six of seven cuts on the PGA Tour and two other cuts on the DP world Tour. In 2023, he has two top-four finishes, at the CJ Cup and Valspar, where he finished T3. He is eighth in this field over the last 24 rounds in Strokes Gained: Total, 10th in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, 24th in Strokes Gained: Ball-Striking and 37th in putting. In his last four starts, he has finished in the top 27 three times. At Quail Hollow Club, he has one missed cut and one T14. After one round, he is a co-leader at -6, so he’s definitely an interesting pick.

Keith Mitchell

had a disappointing showing at the RBC Heritage, but for the rest of 2023, he has been fairly consistent. He is 15th on the PGA Tour in driving distance, and he has done well at the Wells Fargo Championship when it’s been played at Quail Hollow (T3 in 2021, T8 in 2019, T34 in 2018). Given his driving prowess and his skill on Bermuda greens, he is a smart pick – and he finished the first day at -3.
