Updated Golf Odds to Win the 2020 Masters: Tournament is Getting Closer and Closer

Written by on October 12, 2020

In 2020, the Masters is a fall tournament due to scheduling changes on the PGA Tour from the COVID-19 pandemic. It will take place from November 12-15, 2020, which means that it is a month away. Augusta National is a course that big drivers can conquer — assuming that they maintain accuracy. This is why Bryson DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, and Dustin Johnson are up at the top of the odds list. Tiger Woods will be back to compete at Augusta National as well.

Let’s take a look at the updated list of golf odds for contenders (+10000 or better) to don this year’s green jacket.

If we look back over the last five years of history at The Masters, it’s been fairly rare for a favorite to pay off. In 2015, Jordan Spieth won at +800, but since then, the payouts have been lucrative for the correct bets:

  • 2019: Tiger Woods (+1400)
  • 2018: Patrick Reed (+5000)
  • 2017: Sergio Garcia (+3000)
  • 2016: Danny Willett (+5000)

When Tiger Woods won a year ago, he shot a 275 (-13). It was his 15th major, but his first in 11 years, since the U.S. Open in 2008. This win served (at least at the time) as the climax of a recovery from a long dark period in golf, initiated by some personal problems but then exacerbated by a series of injuries that made it difficult for him even to swing a golf club, let alone compete. This was his fifth green jacket and his most memorable. Should you wager on Tiger this year? It’s been almost two decades since Tiger was the last repeat winner at Augusta National, so the odds are not in his favor.

In 2018, Patrick Reed won at +5000 odds, making it back-to-back American winners. The Masters has not had three consecutive American winners since 2005-07. Sergio Garcia and Danny Willett both won as international golfers.

It’s interesting to see Rory McIlroy so high on the odds list here. He hasn’t won a major since 2014, when he won the PGA Championship. Of the four majors on the PGA Tour, the Masters is the one that has eluded him. He did win the FedExCup last year and was the 2019 PGA tour Player of the Year. However, his difficulties at Augusta National make it difficult to put a lot of money on him, given the lack of relative value.

Jon Rahm is currently ranked second in the world — but has yet to win a major. His best performance in any major did come at Augusta National in 2018, when he came in fourth. His career includes six victories on the European Tour and three on the PGA Tour. He was the 2019 Race to Dubai Champion and the European Tour’s Golfer of the Year.

Brooks Koepka has seen his odds slide down a bit over the calendar year. At majors, he has played quite well since 2017, as he has a PGA Championship and two U.S. Open titles. It’s hard to argue that he has the driver distance to win at Augusta National, if Bryson DeChambeau can keep his accuracy that he showed at Winged Foot.
