At long last, the 2020 Masters is slated to get underway this week from Augusta National. Normally, the Masters takes place in the spring, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement. There will not be any fans in attendance, but you can catch Thursday and Friday action on ESPN, with Saturday and Sunday coming on CBS. Tiger Woods returns as the defending champion, but the field around him will be elite as he tries to defend his title.

Bryson DeChambeau remains the emphatic favorite after his dominant win at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot. His strategy of extending his drives well into the 300-yard realm, pushing 400 yards at times, could help him with easy short-iron approaches to the greens, especially given the fact that Augusta National does not have the same sort of sticky rough that Winged Foot has, making accuracy off the tee less important. DeChambeau has taken a month off from competitive golf, though, so it will be interesting to see if he has gathered any rust over that time.
Dustin Johnson has six consecutive finishes in the top six in his last six tournaments. He finished in a tie for second at the 2019 Masters. There were some concerns attached to his COVID-19 diagnosis, but the recovery may also have given him some time to refresh himself. The rust concerns that we have for DeChambeau, though, apply to DJ as well.
Xander Schauffele is a steady top-ten finisher in majors. However, he is still looking for his first career win in a major. Is this where he turns the corner?
Matthew Wolff has two career starts in majors, and he tied for fourth and second. His last two tournaments have not been solid, but he may just be the type of player who gets up for majors.
Brooks Koepka has faded from the majors buzz lately despite winning four in his career. In Houston in his last start, though, he shot 65s on Saturday and Sunday, tying for fifth. He would likely have been even higher if he had not been testing a new driver on Thursday and Friday.
Rory McIlroy needs a win here to complete a career Grand Slam, but he is not looking like his normal self lately. Some of this may have to do with the absence of gallery crowd. In his last four starts, his worst result is a T21, but can he draw from within to get the energy he needs to win a major?
Jon Rahm was the runner-up at Sherwood. He struggled at Winged Foot, but he might be peaking at just the right time to snatch a major.
Patrick Reed has played solid golf in his last four starts and could be building for a great run at Augusta National.
Tyrell Hatton finished T3 at Shadow Creek and T7 in Houston. He also won the BMW PGA and looked terrific in the Tour Championship. He’s not the most consistent golfer, but when he’s on, he’s hard to beat.
