The Wanamaker Trophy will go to the winner of this weekend’s PGA Championship, set for the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Rory McIlroy is the favorite, thanks to his win at the Wells Fargo Championship a few weeks ago as well as his win at the PGA Championship the last time the Ocean Course hosted the event.

Jon Rahm has six top-ten finishes in major championships since 2018, which means that he’s likely to be right there at the end on Sunday. He also can hit the ball a long way, which comes in very handy at the Ocean Course. The distances are long, and the fairways are broad, so it’s a great course for a big hitter to attack.
Xander Schauffele has teased us time and time again at majors, but you have to think that he will win eventually, and the Ocean Course is a favorable setting for him. In this field, he is second in shots gained overall and 14th in shots gained from tee to green. He ranks 19th in greens in regulation and eighth in putting. He tied for third at Augusta, giving him seven top-six finishes in 15 major appearances. Since Augusta, he has finished T11 and T14.
Rory McIlroy has also added to his driver prowess, and the forecast for this weekend calls for light wind (a definite bonus given the course’s proximity to the sea, which can cause chaos once things start swirling. He has also shown a new level of confidence in his putter in recent months, and that combo of driving and putting will make him a dangerous contender.
Justin Thomas comes in off that collapse over the weekend at Augusta, and JT’s only win in a major came just up the road, at North Carolina’s Quail Hollow. He has had time to recover from that setback at the Masters, so he should be in a much better mental place.
Jordan Spieth is an interesting play here. In 2021 we have had several major champions ending droughts that date back several years, along with new winners grabbing tournament titles. Spieth had a huge first day at the Byron Nelson and finished in the top ten, but he had a hard time closing the deal. I’m not sure I’d pick him here yet, because he hasn’t closed well lately — even as he has improved his form.
Viktor Hovland has five top-five finishes so far in 2021, including a pair of two-threes at the Wells Fargo and Valspar Championships. He took off the Byron Nelson so that he could get his game ready for this major. The Ocean Course has Paspalum grass in the fairways, and that surface has proven to work for him, as wins at the Puerto Rico Open and the Mayakoba Golf Classic demonstrate. He is fourth in strokes gained off the tea, sixth in strokes gained tee to green, and 23rd in strokes gained on approach, all helpful metrics for this course.
