The 144th Preakness Stakes is set for Saturday, May 18, from Pimlico in Baltimore, Maryland. There is less buzz for the Preakness than there has been in previous years, because there will not be a Triple Crown winner; Country House, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, is a scratch this week because of a virus. In fact, none of the top four finishers from Churchill Downs will take part in the Preakness for the first time in 68 years. Some other prop bets that will emerge with odds over the course of the week include the winning time of the Preakness Stakes, usually on an over/under basis. You’ll want to check the weather forecast for Saturday as well as recent winning times before locking in your wager, because a rainy day will slow the field down. Other prop bets include the distance between the winning horse and the second-place horse. Given that none of the top four horses from Churchill Downs are here and there are several new entrants among the dozen at Pimlico, this could be a tight finish. There are also some fun prop bets that you can find, particularly at sports books based outside the United States, such as the amount of alcohol consumed by racegoers at the track. You can also choose prop bets that deal with the order of finish of the top horses. The exacta is a wager on the first two finishers; the trifecta is a wager on the top three horses, and the superfecta deals with the top four horses. You can put up a simple pick or you can “box” your picks, which means that, in the example of the exacta, you would pick the first two horses, and they could finish 1-2 or 2-1 and you would still win.
