Atlanta at Washington MLB Series Betting Predictions & Pick

On Thursday, the Atlanta Braves open up a four-game weekend series in Washington against the Nationals, as these two National League East foes wind up the first half of the season. The Nationals is the MLB series betting favorite against the Braves. The Braves are in second place behind the Nationals, but that gap is nine games, which is one reason why the Braves are willing to experiment with Freddie Freeman at third base, a position where he has never played, and if it works, he would become the first former first baseman to move to third with no prior experience at the position in the last 50 years except for Enos Cabell. When you’re a seller, of course, you’ll try just about anything to see if it will work. Take a look at our perspective on all four of these matchups.

Atlanta at Washington MLB Series Betting Predictions & Pick

Thursday, June 6th

When: 7:05pm ET Where: Nationals Park, DC TV: MLB Extra Innings / FSSO (Atlanta) / MASN (Washington) Radio: 93.7 FM (Atlanta) / 106.7 The Fan (Washington) Live Stream: MLB.tv Pitching Matchup: Mike Foltynewicz (6-5, 3.83 ERA) (ATL) vs Gio Gonzalez (7-3, 2.77 ERA (WAS) MLB Series Odds: TBA Mike Foltynewicz has been a real plus for the Braves this season, particularly in recent weeks. In his last start, against Oakland, he took a no-hitter all the way to the ninth inning before permitting a home run. Over his last 19 innings combined, he has permitted only four runs while fanning 21 batters. The Nationals also have a hot pitcher on the hill in Gio Gonzalez, though. Washington has lost his last two starts, but that’s not really on him, as he has permitted just a pair of earned runs, and four combined hits, over 13 innings in those outings against St. Louis and the Cubs. While Foltynewicz benefited from a weak Oakland lineup and the lack of exposure that comes with interleague play, I see Gonzalez and the Nats taking the opener.

Friday, July 7th

When: 7:05pm ET Where: Nationals Park, DC TV: MLB Extra Innings / FSSO (Atlanta) / MASN (Washington) Radio: 93.7 FM (Atlanta) / 106.7 The Fan (Washington) Live Stream: MLB.tv Pitching Matchup: R.A. Dickey (6-5, 4.44 ERA) (ATL) vs Max Scherzer (10-5, 1.94 ERA) (WAS) MLB Series Odds: TBA Knuckleballers can be extremely frustrating to opposing hitters (and to their own catchers). However, the Braves love Dickey right now, because he has permitted no more than a single run in four of his last five outings. Over his last 20 innings, he hasn’t given up any long balls. When knuckleball pitchers can’t find the plate, they usually have to rely on a subpar fastball, which hitters then slam a long way. This is a sign that Dickey’s control (which brought him a Cy Young Award back in 2012) is back where it belongs. Unfortunately, Dickey starts opposite Max Scherzer, who has been even better lately. In his last four starts combined, Scherzer has gone 29 total innings, permitting just two earned runs over that time, and striking out 39 batters. I’m not convinced that the Braves can do enough damage to support Dickey, so I see Washington eking this one out. The Braves head into this MLB series as underdogs against the Nationals.

Saturday, July 8th

When: 4:05pm ET Where: Nationals Park, DC TV: MLB Extra Innings / FSSO (Atlanta) / MASN (Washington) Radio: 93.7 FM (Atlanta) / 106.7 The Fan (Washington) Live Stream: MLB.tv Pitching Matchup: Julio Teheran (6-6, 5.14 ERA) (ATL) vs Stephen Strasburg (9-2, 3.28 ERA) (WAS) MLB Series Odds: TBA Julio Teheran has pitched much better on the road for the Braves than he has at home, posting a 2.88 ERA outside the Peach State and holding hitters to a .235 average. Of his six victories, five have come away from home. Once again, though, the Braves come up against a terrific starting pitcher, this time in Stephen Strasburg. In his last two starts, against the Mets and Cubs, he has gone a combined 14 innings, permitting just six hits and two earned runs, while striking out 19. He did permit six earned runs over five innings — including three home runs — when he saw Atlanta the last time, back on June 12, but I don’t see him struggling again this time. Give me the Nationals on Saturday.

Sunday, July 9th

When: 1:35pm ET Where: Nationals Park, DC TV: MLB Extra Innings / FSSO (Atlanta) / MASN (Washington) Radio: 93.7 FM (Atlanta) / 106.7 The Fan (Washington) Live Stream: MLB.tv Pitching Matchup: Sean Newcomb (1-3, 3.58 ERA) (ATL) vs Joe Ross (5-3, 4.86 ERA) (WAS) MLB Series Odds: TBA Sean Newcomb makes his sixth start for the season for Atlanta on Sunday afternoon. His first four outings were terrific, as he had combined to go 24 ⅓ innings, permitting just four earned runs (three in one game) and striking out 34. However, on July 4, he got demolished by the Houston Astros, giving up seven earned runs on ten hits on 3 ⅓ innings. He has a primo fastball that he can usually locate well, so I see the Houston start as more of an aberration after a solid start. Joe Ross has a solid record over his last four starts: 26 ⅔ combined innings, seven earned runs. He does give up a lot of hits and walks (1.46 WHIP), though, and that will catch up to him eventually. I see a lot of the Nationals looking ahead to that All-Star break — and the team playing a lot of reserves — so I see Atlanta snatching this game to finish the series.
