Remember when the Baltimore Orioles seemed to have a 99-year lease on the basement of the American League East? They only won 52 games in 2021, making it four straight years in dead last. The other four teams in the division all won more than 90 games, which made the punishment even more brutal for the O’s. In three of those four dead-last campaigns, the Orioles lost at least 100 games, and the only reason it wasn’t four in a row was the shortening of the 2020 pandemic season. Then catcher Adley Rutschman had his phenomenal rookie campaign, and the Orioles won 31 more games in 2022 than they did in 2021, turning in an 83-79 record. They didn’t snag a wild card, but they were ready to keep improving in 2023. They won 28 more games than they did in 2022, leading the American League with 101 wins. The season came to a crashing halt when the Texas Rangers swept the Orioles in a three-game Division Series en route to the Rangers’ first-ever World Series title. What can we expect in 2024? We’ll go over the team’s MLB betting odds of repeating as AL East champs, of winning the pennant and of winning the World Series.

No more cheapskates by the Chesapeake
The Angelos family owned the Orioles until recently, and their stewardship of a once-proud American League franchise had been marked by incompetence and frugality. When the Orioles did invest in free agents, they chose poorly; more often than not, they chose to underspend and rely on the goodness of their fans’ hearts to attend games. David Rubenstein recently closed on the purchase of the team, and he has the pockets to spend when talent is available.
Get ready for Jackson Holliday
While Rutschman is ready to move on from the next great rookie to the best catcher in baseball, Jackson Holliday could be getting all the rave reviews as 2024’s best rookie. He is the son of Matt Holliday, the seven-time All-Star. The shortstop got a grade of 70 from MLB Pipeline, who rates prospects from 20 to 80. His power and running tools earned a 60 (on the same scale), and his hitting tool earned a 70. Several books have him favored to win Rookie of the Year.
Strong pitching again in 2023
The Orioles had terrific starting and relief pitching in 2023. Kyle Bradish notched 168 ⅔ innings, posting a 2.83 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. Closer Felix Bautista converted 33 saves, and the staff as a whole had the American League’s seventh-best ERA and the eighth-best WHIP. Bautista will be on the shelf for the whole 2024 campaign thanks to Tommy John surgery, which should mean that Craig Kimbrel slides into the closer role and Yennier Cano will cover the eighth inning.
The Orioles added star power to their rotation by getting Corbin Burnes from Milwaukee. Since the beginning of the 2020 campaign, he has thrown 622 ⅓ innings, striking out 765 batters and posting a 2.86 ERA and a WHIP of less than 1.00. He also won a Cy Young trophy with the Brewers in 2021, so he’s the Orioles’ new ace. None too soon, though, because Bradish is not projected to be ready for Opening Day. Prospect Grayson Rodriguez made 10 starts in August and September, notching a 2.41 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. Things fell apart for him in the postseason, but the rise in pressure in October could have caused that. The future is bright in Baltimore, and with the Yankees given way too much credit for their prior history in the oddsmaking – injury issues in their rotation and the lack of a true center fielder make for a shaky start to 2024 – the Orioles are a smart pick to win this division again. With Burnes arriving as a true ace in the rotation, a pennant and title are definitely within reach.
