Are the Chicago Cubs back? Will the Los Angeles Dodgers win 120 games? Could the Tampa Bay Rays swoop in and take one of those wild-card slots? All of these are reasonable questions after what’s gone on in the past week. Best SU MLB Betting Picks for the Weekend Action

Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays

When: Friday, July 21st. 7:10 PM ET Where: Tropicana Field TV: MLB Extra Innings / FSSW (Texas) / FS1 (Tampa Bay) StreamMLB.tv Radio: 105.3 The Fan (Texas) / 95.3 FM (Tampa Bay) MLB Betting Odds: Rangers -130 Pitching Matchup: Yu Darvish (6-8, 3.45 ERA) (TEX) vs Alex Cobb (8-6, 3.59 ERA) (TB) The Texas Rangers came out of the All-Star break with a pair of wins against the Kansas City Royals. Since then, though, they have dropped five in a row, including a four-game sweep by Baltimore in which they outscored 34-11. Yu Darvish, the team’s lone All-Star and (for some reason) designated as the one player the Rangers should not trade right now, has not won a game since June 12, posting a 1-6 record with a 4-09 ERA over his last 10 starts. He still has that scary curveball, but he’s leaving his fastball right out over the plate, and hitters are making him pay for it. He looks for some redemption against Tampa Bay, and there is some cause for optimism, as he has posted a 4-0 record and a 1.09 ERA in five career outings against the Rays. Opposite Darvish is Alex Cobb, who looked dominant on Saturday night against the Los Angeles Angels, pitching 7 ⅔ innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits. He has made four starts against the Rangers in his career, posting a 1-0 record and a 2.77 ERA, and he has a 2.64 ERA at Tropicana Field this season. The Rays have won six of eight to move six games above .500 and into legitimate consideration in the wild card race. I see them winning the series opener against a reeling Rangers squad.

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals

When: Saturday, July 22nd. 7:15 PM ET Where: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri TV: WGN (Chicago) / FSKC (Kansas City) Stream: MLB.tv Radio: WLS 890 (Chicago) / KCSP 610 (Kansas City) MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Mike Pelfrey (3-7, 4.64 ERA) (CHI) vs Jason Vargas (12-4, 3.06 ERA) (KC) The Kansas City Royals have played themselves out of an early season funk, but they can’t seem to make much progress past the .500 barrier. Jason Vargas has been the team’s ace this year, but his last two starts have shown some signs of fatigue. He has permitted 12 runs in 7 ⅔ combined innings, permitting five home runs — after a June in which he permitted just three home runs in the whole month. However, the only White Sox with some extended success against Vargas are Tim Anderson (.500 in 8 at-bats) and Melky Cabrera (.316, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 19 AB). The White Sox send Mike Pelfrey to the mound, and his struggles tend to come later in in contest, as opponents put up a gaudy 1.339 OPS against him when they see him for the third time in a contest. Pitch count tends to fatigue him as well, as after he hits the 75-pitch plateau, opponents have a 1.286 OPS against him. Alcides Escobar (.409, 2 RBI), Eric Hosmer (.500 in 14 AB) and Mike Moustakas (.412, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 17 AB) have all hit Pelfrey hard in the past. I see the Royals and Vargas taking this win over the White Sox.

Are the White Sox a safe MLB betting pick for this weekend?

Pittsburgh Pirates at Colorado Rockies

When: Sunday, July 23rd. 3:10 PM ET Where: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado TV: ATT SportsNet-PIT (Pittsburgh) / ATT SportsNet-RM (Colorado) Stream: MLB.tv Radio: KDKA-FM 93.7 (Pittsburgh) / 94.1 FM (Colorado) MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Ivan Nova (10-6, 3.27 ERA) (PIT) vs Kyle Freeland (9-7, 3.67 ERA) (COL) Kyle Freeland had spent some time in the bullpen because his innings total was getting on the high side. However, his last start didn’t show any signs of wear and tear, as he came two outs away of posting the first Colorado no-hitter in the history of Coors Field. None of the Pirate hitters have faced him more than four times, and Josh Harrison is the only one who has taken him out of the yard. The Pirates start 10-game winner Ivan Nova, who limited Milwaukee to three runs on 10 hits in a six-inning stint on Tuesday. He is a durable pitcher, going more than six innings per start, but his numbers have worsened slightly lately, as he has a 3.97 ERA over his last 14 starts. Both of those teams are on a positive trend right now, but the Rockies offense is firing on all cylinders right now, as they have scored 49 runs in their last four games entering the weekend. I like Freeland and the Rockies to win this one.
