Why should you consider the Red Sox MLB Odds?
This will be Drew Pomeranz’s first playoff start, but he does have postseason experience with Boston, as he came out of the bullpen for the Sox during their playoff run a year ago. He should be quite familiar with the Astros’ lineup, as he saw them on Saturday in the last weekend of the regular season. He threw six strong innings, limiting the Houston lineup to a single run, although it should be noted that the Astros were resting some regulars ahead of the playoffs in that weekend series, with home field in the ALDS already wrapped up. Several of Houston’s best hitters have teed off on Pomeranz in the past. Jose Altuve (.417 career average, 1 RBI), Carlos Correa (.600), Jake Marisnick (.333, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and Cameron Maybin (.333) all likely look forward to seeing Pomeranz on Saturday afternoon. He has had more success against the likes of Carlos Beltran, Alex Bregman, Evan Gattis and Yuli Gurriel, who are all batting lower than .100 against him in their careers. Dallas Keuchel has a Cy Young Award on his resume, and his last three starts in the regular season showed that he is ready for the postseason, as he posted a combined 2.00 ERA in those outings. He has struggled against Boston in the past, though, putting up an unsightly 9.88 ERA in three appearances (two starts). His postseason experience consists of three appearances in 2015 when he put up a 2.57 combined ERA. When Keuchel is on, there are few lefties in the American League that are as tough to hit, but which Keuchel will show up on Friday afternoon?
Despite Keuchel’s awful historical numbers against Boston, he has pitched well against many of the regulars who will face him on Friday. Xander Bogaerts (.143), Mitch Moreland (.077) and Rajai Davis (.000 in 17 AB) have all had a hard time hitting against him. Only Bogaerts and Mookie Betts have ever homered off him. If you like the Astros here, then you see their patient lineup getting to Pomeranz (most of their best bats are right-handed, and Pomeranz is a lefty) and getting into that Boston bullpen early.
