The Milwaukee Brewers are vying with the Cincinnati Reds at the top of the National League West – but this has not been a good division this year. Right now, the Brewers (42-38) are a half-game behind the Reds, with the Pittsburgh Pirates (38-42) four games back of Milwaukee. The Brewers head to Pittsburgh this weekend with an excellent chance to create some distance between themselves and the third-place Pirates and put heat on the Reds.

MLB Betting Preview for Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates Series
June 30-July 2, 2023
Freddy Peralta (5-7, 4.65 ERA) (MIL) vs Osvaldo Bido (0-1, 3.45 ERA) (PIT)
Friday, June 30, 2023 at 7:05 pm ET | Apple TV+
Freddy Peralta has been fairly consistent through the month of June: last five or six innings, give up a few runs, but not too many (he’s permitted between two and four runs in each June start). He has allowed six home runs in the month, and he’s piled up 31 strikeouts against 10 walks. These aren’t bad numbers, but they’re numbers that require solid help from the bullpen and some work from the bats to get wins. The Brewers have won two of his starts, but both wins came when the bullpen had taken over the game.
Osvaldo Bido makes his fourth start against the Brewers. The Pirates have lost all three games he started, but all of them have been tough-luck outings. He only allowed one run over four innings in his season debut against the Cubs, but the bullpen collapsed in a 10-6 loss. He saw the Cubs again and held them to three runs over six innings – but the Cubs shut the Pirates out. He allowed two runs over 5 ⅔ innings against the Marlins on Saturday, but the Marlins came back and won in extra innings. Pirates to win.
Corbin Burnes (5-5, 4.10 ERA) (MIL) vs Johan Oviedo (3-8, 4.06 ERA) (PIT)
Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 4:05 pm ET
Corbin Burnes’ ERA has climbed from 3.44 to 4.10 over his last two starts; against Arizona and Cleveland, he threw 10 ⅔ combined innings, allowing 11 runs on 16 hits, including a pair of home runs. He has struck out six and walked four, but he’s finding way too much of the plate. The Brewers were able to come back and beat Cleveland in extra innings, but he can’t make this many mistakes against the Pirates and expect to win.
Johan Oviedo has a 3.23 ERA for the month of June, and in his last two starts, his season ERA has dropped from 4.40 to 4.06. Against the Cubs and Marlins, he permitted three runs on 11 hits over 13 combined innings, striking out nine without issuing a walk. The problem? In his last four starts, the Pirates have scored just three runs in his starts; in these last two starts, they haven’t scored at all. They will need to get their bats going against Burnes. Brewers to win.
Colin Rea (4-4, 4.57 ERA) (MIL) vs Rich Hill (7-7, 4.45 ERA) (PIT)
Sunday, July 2, 2023 at 1:35 pm ET
Colin Rea has put together two terrific starts in June: a five-inning gem against Baltimore, where he scattered three hits and a walk without permitting a run while striking out eight; and 6 ⅓ innings on Monday against the Mets, allowing one run on three hits, striking out three and walking one. In the two starts in between those, though, he allowed nine combined runs (eight earned) on a dozen hits over 10 ⅓ innings against the Twins and the Diamondbacks. Which version will show up against the Pirates?
Rich Hill has a 3.86 ERA for the month of June, but that ticked upward on Tuesday, when he allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings in a 9-4 win over San Diego. He faced Milwaukee on June 16, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and six walks over five innings in a 5-4 loss. The Milwaukee offense has been better lately, so I’m going with the Brewers. Brewers to win.
