Houston is once again showing some signs of life after going on a skid that saw their lead atop the division cut to just 2.5 games. Houston lost 7 in a row last week before getting back on track over the weekend by taking 2 of 3 from the Mariners. They have to be particularly pleased with how the bats came back to life in the Seattle series, as they scored 23 runs in the 2 games that they won. That is a whole lot better than the anemic offense they put up during the slump last week. Another bright spot is that they gave up 0 runs in both those win, although they did lose 8-1 in the middle game of that series. Vincent Velasquez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will get the start for the Astros on Tuesday. Velazquez has only pitched 5 innings this season, but was excellent in doing so, giving up just 3 hits and 0 runs versus the White Sox.
The Colorado Rockies (28-34) have to be coming into this one not feeling particularly good about themselves. They are coming off a series against the woeful Marlins, where they somehow managed to lose 3 of 4 games. Colorado has actually been better on the road than at home this season, and were actually above .500 on the road prior to the series in Miami. All the more frustrating for the Rockies had to be the fact that they had just come off a big series win against the Cardinals, and were looking to build some momentum. Things could get even worse when facing an Astros side that looks as though it might have its groove back. Chris Rusin (2-1, 3.38 ERA) will start for the Rockies, and will need to improve upon his last start versus the Marlins, where he was totally shelled.
