The Chicago Cubs (80-58) have been the pleasant surprise of the season, as no-one really expected them to be this good this soon. Yes, they have a great group of young talent, but that usually means waiting a year or two for those guys to get some big league experience. Guys like Rizzo and Bryant and stepped up and delivered the good immediately, though, which only makes you wonder how good this team will be in a couple of years.
The Cubs are coming into this one after taking 2 of 3 from the St. Louis Cardinals, and it could have been a sweep were it not for some late inning heroics from St. Louis. The fact that the Cubs are likely going to finish third in the division and still end up in the playoffs shows you just how strong the NL Central is right now. Dan Haren (9-9, 3.73 ERA) seems to be settling into a groove at just the right time, as he is coming into this one after back to back quality starts.
It is beginning to look more and more as though the Philadelphia Phillies (54-86) are going to win something this season. The bad news is that it will be the worst record in baseball, which will get them the consolation prize of the first pick in the MLB draft. The Atlanta Braves were pushing them for that record, but you have to give some credit to the Braves for going out and taking 2 of 3 games from the Phillies, and doing so in some style. It really is tough to see where Philadelphia goes from here, as they have been on a steady decline that has finally seen them hit bottom. How long they stay there will depend on the moves they make this offseason. Jerad Eickhoff (1-3, 4.70 ERA) has come back to earth with a bang after making a great big league debut.
