Friday’s Top MLB Betting Matchups, Picks & Predictions

The weekend is almost here — are your picks ready to go? We’ve got three Friday MLB betting night matchups for you to consider. The red-hot Houston Astros are in Baltimore to tangle with the Orioles, who have spent the middle of this week making the Texas Rangers’ pitching staff look like they are throwing batting practice. Detroit visits the Minnesota Twins in an American League Central matchup, and Washington heads out west to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in a potential preview of National League playoff opponents.

Friday’s Top MLB Betting Matchups, Picks & Predictions

Houston Astros at Baltimore Orioles

When: Friday 21st, 2017. 6:05pm CT Where: Oriole Park, Baltimore, MD TV: MLBN (out-of-market only) / ATT SportsNet-SW (Houston) / MASN 2 (Baltimore) Radio: KBME 790 (Houston) / 105.7 The Fan (Baltimore) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Mike Fiers (6-4, 3.75 ERA) (HOU) vs Ubaldo Jimenez (4-5, 7.01 ERA) (BAL) Ubaldo Jimenez has hideous numbers — particularly as of late. In his 14 starts so far this season, four of his outings have lasted less than four innings — including his last one, when he went just 3 ⅔ innings against the Chicago Cubs, permitting six earned runs on 11 hits. Pitching at home, Jimenez is even worse, posting an 8.13 ERA. He did pitch well the last time he saw Houston, though, coming out of the bullpen to throw six strong innings, needing 92 pitches to do it. However, several Houston hitters have big numbers against Jimenez, including Carlos Beltran (.400 lifetime average, 2 HR, 5 RBI), Evan Gattis (.364, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and Josh Reddick (.500, 1 HR, 2 RBI).

Who Will Start for the Astros on Friday?

The Astros start Mike Fiers, whose numbers have been improving lately. In his last start, on July 16, he lasted seven strong innings, permitting just two earned runs and needing just 92 pitches. The only Oriole who has ever homered off Fiers is slugger Chris Davis, and none of the Baltimore batters who have faced Fiers more than four times has a career average over .200 against him. I like the Astros to roll in this one, pounding Jimenez and then the Baltimore bullpen.

Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins

When: Friday 21st, 2017. 8:10pm ET Where: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota TV: FS-D (Detroit) / FSNO (Minnesota) Radio: 97.1 The Ticket (Detroit) / Go 96.3 (Minnesota) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Anibal Sanchez (1-0, 6.08 ERA) (DET) vs Ervin Santana (11-6, 2.99 ERA) (MIN) Anibal Sanchez has returned to the Tigers’ rotation with mixed results so far. In his last start, he permitted five runs (thanks to three home runs) against Toronto, lasting six innings. He faced the Twins earlier this year in relief, but Minnesota shelled him for eight runs in that outing. Overall, Sanchez has made six starts, putting up a 3.99 ERA over 29 ⅓ combined innings, fanning 25 batters and walking just four. Overall, Sanchez has a career 5-4 record with a 3.65 ERA. Ervin Santana continues to keep the Twins competitive; in his last start, he led Minnesota to a win over Houston, pitching six strong innings and limiting that powerful Astros lineup to just a pair of runs. Lifetime, Santana has gone 9-4 against the Tigers, posting a 3.08 ERA and striking out 110 batters in 122 ⅔ innings. I see Santana outpitching Sanchez and leading the Twins to a home win on Friday night.

Are the Nationals a safe MLB betting pick against the Diamondbacks?

Washington Nationals at Arizona Diamondbacks

When: Friday 21st, 2017. 9:40pm ET Where: Chase Field, Phoenix TV: MASN (Washington) / FS-A (Arizona) Radio: Chase Field, Phoenix (Washington) / Chase Field, Phoenix (Arizona) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Max Scherzer (11-5, 2.01 ERA) (WAS) vs Patrick Corbin (6-9, 4-66 ERA) (ARI) Even when Max Scherzer doesn’t have his best stuff, he still mows down the opposition. On Saturday against Cincinnati he struck out 10 batters, giving him nine starts in his last 10 with double-digit strikeouts. He permitted three hits in six shutout innings. Diamondbacks slugger Paul Goldschmidt is 0-12 lifetime against Scherzer, although Jake Lamb (.444, 2 HR, 2 RBI), Gregor Blanco (.400) and Chris Owings (.375) have had some success.

Who Will Take the Mound for the Diamondbacks on Saturday?

Arizona sends Patrick Corbin to the mound — and he’s still looking for his first victory since June 16. His ERA over that span is 3.18 ERA in five starts, but he hasn’t gotten much in the way of run support. Washington has some batters that like to face Corbin, including Stephen Drew (.667), Bryce Harper (.429), Chris Helsey (.333, 2 HR, 4 RBI), Daniel Murphy (.600) and Ryan Raburn (.400, 1 HR, 1 RBI). I like the Nationals to blow by Arizona behind a strong night from Scherzer.
