While some teams make hay by getting wins against less than stellar teams, others prove their worth by knocking off the big boys. The Houston Astros (71-57) seem to be falling into that latter category if their last two series are anything to go by. They started out by sweeping the LA Dodgers, before taking 2 of 3 from the Yankees for their encore. That fine run of form has seen them once again open up a comfortable lead in the AL West, where they lead the Texas Rangers by 5.5 games. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of those two series was that the Astros gave up just 7 runs over the 6 games. That is the sort of stifling defense that you would expect from a team gearing up for the final playoff push. Scott Kazmir (7-8, 2.39 ERA) has proven to be a solid acquisition for Houston, and he will get the start on Friday.
By the middle part of last week, it looked as though the Minnesota Twins (65-61) were about to drop out of the playoff race. They were 2 games under .500 and looking like a team that was done, but a sweep of the Orioles seemed to breathe new life into the club house. They have taken the first 2 games of their series versus Tampa Bay, and have reclaimed the final Wild Card spot, although only by the slimmest of margins. This has proven to be a fantastic end to a road trip that started with a sweep at the hands of the Yankees, and now the Twins will have 6 games at home to try and pad their lead in the Wild Card. They are a solid 38-24 at home this season, so the numbers certainly appear to be on their side. Kyle Gibson (8-9, 3.96 ERA) will get the start for the Twins.
