The Blue Jays (65-54) still have to be simmering after dropping 2 of 3 at home to the New York Yankees over the weekend. It’s hard for them to be too disappointed, though, as that series loss came on the heels of an 11-game winning streak that hauled the Jays right back into the division race. They are now a game back of the Yankees, and understand that they cannot afford to look beyond any opponent, no matter how bad they might be. The Jays will be hitting the road this week, which may present a problem given that they are 6 games under .500 away from Roger’s Centre. That said, this is a team that has been red hot since the trade deadline, and who have no major injuries to speak of. They did make a roster move ahead of the trip, sending pitcher Drew Hutchison down to AAA. Mark Buehrle (13-5, 3.31 ERA) will be looking for his third straight win when he takes the mound on Wednesday.
The Philadelphia Phillies (46-72) got their second half off to a very good start, but have recently come crashing back down to earth. They have lost 5 of their last 6 games, and are coming into this series having just been swept by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Phillies are among the very worst in the league in all the major defensive stats, which is not something that inspires a whole lot of confidence when you have a high-powered offense about to roll into town. The Phillies gave up 45 runs during the last 6 games, and have had difficulty getting anything going on offense during that period. Adam Morgan (3-4, 4.11 ERA) will be the pitcher charged with trying to slow down the Blue Jays big hitters.
