The Mets (15-7) are starting to come back to earth a little after an 11-game win streak that vaulted them to the top of the NL East. They have now lost 2 straight series to the Yankees and Marlins, but are still holding a 4.5 game lead at the top as the rest of the division struggles. It has been their pitching that has helped put them into this lofty position, and it’s going to be interesting to see how their rotation matches up with the Nationals over the weekend series. The aforementioned Matt Harvey (4-0, 3.04 ERA) is penciled in for the start on Friday, which is great news for the Mets. Harvey was brilliant in his last start, going 8.2 innings, and giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, whilst also striking out 7.
Everyone is just sitting waiting around for the Washington Nationals (9-13) to get hot, but they haven’t really shown any real signs of being able to do so. Sure, they just won a series against the Braves, scoring 13 runs in each of their last outings, but that would look a whole lot more impressive Atlanta was not playing like a team in serious decline. That said, the bats did get hot in that series, but they are unlikely to stay that way against a pitcher like Matt Harvey. This series is shaping up to be a pitcher’s duel, which is why Max Scherzer (1-2, 1.26 ERA) will need to be at his very best to get one over on Harvey. Scherzer is living proof that the win/loss stats for a pitcher are essentially meaningless, as he has been the best pitcher for the Nats to this point in the season. In the 2 losses that he has picked up this season, the team was only able to support him with a combined 2 runs.
