The Subway Series between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees, postponed last week because of positive COVID-19 tests on the Mets’ roster, is set to start on Friday afternoon. The teams meet in a doubleheader on Friday and then play through the weekend as well. The Yankees (16-11) are 2 ½ games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, as they have split their last ten games. The Mets (13-16) are in fourth place in the National League East, 4 ½ games behind the Atlanta Braves. The Mets have yet to set their rotation for the weekend series, as they have had to reshuffle their lineups on the fly after the postponements they have faced.

Take a look at our MLB betting thoughts on the series opener.

Why should you Bet on the Mets?

The Mets have been up and down throughout the season — which is a fair description of just about everyone except the Dodgers and the Cubs to this point. Given the uncertainties that come with multiple postponements due to COVID-19, it is hard for teams to maintain focus from day to day. The Mets swept Miami before having their series with the Yankees postponed…and then dropped two of three against those same Marlins to start this week.

Did you know that Don Smith had 21 RBI in 20 games in which he has appeared with the Mets this season? This is definitely a season of interrupted rhythms, so the more bats the Mets can get going, the greater their chance of grinding their way into the expanded 2020 postseason. Can they keep the Yankees’ misery going?

Why should you Put your Money on the Yankees?

J.A. Happ struggled in his first two starts of the 2020 season. Against the Orioles and Phillies, he gave up eight runs on seven hits, including three home runs, just seven combined innings. He struck out three but walked eight (including six against the Phillies). The Yankees were able to outscore the Orioles, but the Phillies hung 11 on the Yankees in that matchup. In his third start, though, Happ was much better. After skipping a turn in the rotation, Happ threw 5 ⅔ innings of three-hit, one-run ball, striking out three and walking two. If he can pitch like that against the Mets, the Yankees should be able to win.

The Yankees got swept by the Tampa Bay Rays last week to fall out of first place in the AL East and then had their weekend series canceled. They got swept in a short two-game set in Atlanta this week, losing by a combined score of 7-2. To be fair, they have a lot of offense on the Injured List, including Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres. However, Luke Voit went 7 for 14 with five home runs in losing efforts against the Rays last week, and if he can keep hitting, that will help things until the big bats come back.

The Final Word

I have a hard time picking in a game when one team has not announced a starting pitcher. Happ does look like he’s figured things out for the Yankees, and if he can keep the ball down and in the strike zone (and if the Mets have to rely on an opener and long relief), the Yankees should have the bats to get this done, even with their injuries. I’m not locking in wagers until I see the Mets’ starter, but for now I’m picking the Yankees to win, 5-3.
