MLB: Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies

MLB Betting: Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies Series Odds

Written by on August 5, 2020

The National League East is one of the more confusing divisions in Major League Baseball, as the Philadelphia Phillies and the Miami Marlins have only played four games, the Washington Nationals have only played eight games and the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves have played 12 games, due to postponements that happened after the Marlins and Phillies had positive tests for COVID-19. The Braves (8-4) lead the division, while the Phillies (1-3) sit three games back. The teams meet in Philadelphia for a four-game set that runs Friday through Monday. We have a baseball betting overview for the four games, although we do recommend waiting to bet on the Saturday and Sunday games until both teams have named a starting pitcher. Take a look at what we have so far for this NL East showdown.

Projected Pitching Matchups:

Who should you pick in Friday’s game?

Both of Friday’s starters got lit up a bit in their first forays to the mound this year. Kyle Wright gave up five runs (all earned) on four hits in 2 ⅔ innings in his debut against Tampa Bay, striking out three and walking three. He settled down a bit against the Mets on August 2, permitting five hits but throwing 3 ⅓ innings of shutout ball, striking out five but walking four. Wright allows a lot of baserunners, which could get him into trouble.

Vince Velasquez has just one appearance this year, back on July 26 against Miami. He lasted just three innings, giving up four earned runs on three hits (including two home runs), striking out four while walking two. Given that the Braves already have a +21 run differential on the season, when it’s a battle of two potentially subpar pitchers, I’m going with the team with the better offense.

Who should you pick in Saturday’s game?

Remember when Jake Arrieta was a Cy Young winner and a dominant hurler for the Cubs? He came to Philadelphia for some redemption and is still waiting. He went up against Gerit Cole on August 3 and came up short, as the Yankees got him for three earned runs on seven hits, including a pair of long balls, over five innings. It will be interesting to see whom the Braves put on the mound, as ace Mike Soroka is done for the season with an Achilles tear.

If it’s a minor leaguer or long reliever, I’m taking the Phillies.

Who should you pick in Sunday’s game?

Max Fried has been a real find for the Braves so far this season. In each of his last two starts, he has finished the sixth inning, giving up seven hits and two earned runs in 12 ⅔ innings combined, striking out 10 and walking three. Philadelphia has yet to name a starter for this game, and given how well Fried has pitched so far, I would take him over an unknown — but I would wait to commit until I see the other starter.

For now, Braves to win | Check the Odds

Who should you pick in Monday’s game?

Sean Newcomb looked serviceable in his season debut against the Mets, allowing a single run on three hits over 3 ⅓ innings. However, he saw the Mets again on July 31 and got lit up for six earned runs on six hits, including two long balls, over 4 ⅓ innings. I would wait to see Newcomb’s numbers in his Wednesday game against Toronto before making a judgment on him here. Aaron Nola looked inconsistent against Miami on July 24, going 5 ⅓ innings and fanning seven but giving up four earned runs on five hits, including a home run. He will have action in Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Yankees, so I’d look at his numbers there.
