There can be no denying it, the Braves (54-78) have been pretty awful in the second half. Pretty much anything of value that they had on the roster has been traded away, and the focus has now turned to developing youth. The Braves brought in a number of young guys when the rosters were expanded to 40, but it’s a not so young guy who is making all the headlines. Hector Olivera is 30 years old, and has played most of his career in the Dominican Republic.
He came to the Braves in a trade that sent Alex Wood to the Dodgers, and much is expected of him. He got his first major league start on Tuesday night, going hitless, but in fairness, he is still a little rusty after missing time with a hamstring injury. Matt Wisler (5-5, 5.22 ERA) will be bringing a 3-game losing skid to the mound with him when he starts on Thursday.
Time is fast beginning to run out for the Washington Nationals (66-65), as they seem unable to make any sort of dent in the 5.5 game lead that the Mets have atop the NL East. They are in danger of being swept by the Cardinals on Wednesday night, and are sure to be looking ahead to the 3-game series against the Mets that starts next Monday. Looking ahead would be a huge mistake, though, as this series is an opportunity for them to get some much needed wins. The Braves are having a tough time generating any sort of offense, which means that the Nationals bats may not have to be that hot in order to get the wins. That said, they will want to try and win in some style so that they can head into the all-important Mets series on a bit of a roll. Jordan Zimmermann (11-8, 3.45 ERA) will get the start, as he looks to make it 4 wins in a row.
