“I don’t want to be able to hear myself think, Pittsburgh.” –@TheCUTCH22 READ/SHARE: http://t.co/7fdwvKGCh1 pic.twitter.com/O2uICkslP9
— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) October 6, 2015
The Pirates got 51 saves out of their closer, including 35 in a row. Both of those numbers are team records. They finished with the top two leaders in outfield assists, with Marte posting 16 and Polanco tallying 13. The Pirates’ team ERA (3.21) was second best in MLB, only behind St. Louis. By winning 98 games, Pittsburgh tied for the third most in the team’s history.
The Pirates will start Gerrit Cole on the mound. In nine career starts against the Cubs, he has a record of 7-1 with an ERA of 2.88. This year, he went 2-1 against Chicago, tallying a 2.13 ERA. In 15 home starts this season, Cole had a record of 9-3 with a 2.83 ERA. Cubs first baseman Mike Rizzo is hitting .353 against Cole, though. The Cubs also had more hits against the Pirate closer than any other team, with 12.
Cole has an impressive record in the late parts of seasons. In career starts after September 1, he has a record of 12-2. When he gets at least three runs of offensive support, he has a record of 37-6. In one-run games in 2015, the Pirates had a record of 36-17, the best in MLB.
The city of Pittsburgh remains proud of their team, as Allegheny County is hosting a playoff rally for the team on Tuesday , the county courthouse courtyard. Throughout the county, Tuesday was named “Pittsburgh Pirates Pride Day,” with people encouraged to wear their Pirates apparel or at least black and gold. Wednesday will be “Buctober Black Out Day” with people asked to wear black, no matter where they are going that day.
What awaits the Pirates should they win? Their 98-win season gets them a date with the 100-win St. Louis Cardinals in the wild card round. The team with the best record among the three division winners gets to play the wild-card game winner. This is supposed to give that first seed the most favorable matchup, but the irony is that Pittsburgh or Chicago is likely to make a tougher opponent for St. Louis than either the Dodgers or Mets. All three of the NL Central playoff qualifiers have had terrific seasons, and it is a shame that only one of them can make it to the NLCS.
