NY Yankees at Cleveland ALDS Game 1 Odds & MLB Betting Pick

Written by on October 4, 2017

The Baby Bombers are into the playoffs a year or two earlier than anyone expected, thanks to the emergence of Aaron Judge and the other Baby Bombers, and the arrival of Aroldis Chapman to solidify the back end of the bullpen. The Yankees hosted Minnesota (the first team ever in MLB history to lose 100 games and then make the playoffs in the next season) in the wild card game Tuesday night, emerging 8-4 winners. Now the youthful Yanks head to Cleveland to take on the top-seeded Indians in the opening game of their American League Division Series. The Yankees have yet to name a starting pitcher, so I might wait to lock in my MLB betting pick until a starter is announced. For now, though, take a look at our perspective on the opener before the MLB odds come out.

Why should you bet on the Yankees?

Obviously, the Yankees are glad to be in the Division Series, but they had to blow up their pitching staff to get here. Luis Severino, the team’s 23-year-old ace, only lasted ⅓ of an inning before manager Joe Girardi came out with that quick hook. Yes, Chad Green, David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle and Aroldis Chapman combined for 8 ⅔ innings of one-run relief, but now there are questions to answer. Will C.C. Sabathia or Sonny Gray get the start? Either one has the numbers from the regular season to justify the start, but if they run into trouble like Severino did, the Yankees will struggle mightily to put together another all-out bullpen effort. The Yankees led MLB with 241 home runs on the season, and they used that weapon again in the wild card game against the Twins. Aaron Judge appears to have beaten the strikeout bug that dogged him for about a month after the All-Star break. Gary Sanchez, one of the best power-hitting catchers in the game today, provides menace lower down the lineup. If you like the Yankees here, then you see them riding that wave of wild card momentum another night — and you see whichever starter comes out for the Yankees outpitching Bauer and the Indians’ bullpen long enough to give the Yankee bullpen some rest.

Why should you put your money on the Indians?

Trevor Bauer has had career bests in wins (17) and strikeouts (198) this season, and his record at home has been even better than on the road, as he has posted a 10-4 record and a 3.93 combined ERA at Progressive Field. By starting Bauer here (and pushing Corey Kluber to Game 2), the Indians show a great deal of confidence in their bullpen, which includes fourth and fifth starters Mike Clevinger and Danny Salazar, as well as former Yankee Andrew Miller. Are the Indians a safe bet in Game 1 of the ALDS? The Indians started 2017 in a bit of a World Series hangover (remember, they turned a 3-1 World Series lead into a seven-game loss to the Chicago Cubs), but after the All-Star break they emerged from their doldrums and put together a record-breaking 22-game winning streak down the stretch to take not just the American League Central crown but the top record in the American League. The Cleveland bats include Jose Ramirez and Francisco Lindor, each of whom had more than 80 extra-base hits on the season, so the Yankees’ pitching staff will have their work cut out for them.

Expert MLB Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

The Yankees showed explosive power and clutch relief pitching in their wild card win. But did they use so much energy Tuesday night that they will come out sluggish against the Tribe? I see Bauer and the Cleveland bullpen leading the Indians to a 4-2 win.
