NY Yankees vs Seattle Mariners MLB Betting Preview

When teams from different divisions meet, it’s often fun to compare where they would be if they were asked to switch divisions. The New York Yankees, who currently lead the AL East, would be barely holding on to the third spot in the West, about 6 games out of first, while the Seattle Mariners would be right in the thick of the MLB Betting division race if they were dropped into the East. We will have a better idea of how these two teams actually compare when they meet in a 3-game series in Seattle, the final game of which will go on Wednesday afternoon.

The Yankees (27-25) are still clinging to a surprising 1-game lead atop the division, but if truth be told, they aren’t really being put under a great deal of pressure. All 4 teams below them are currently in a losing streak of varying lengths, allowing the Yankees to pad their lead a little with every win. That’s not to say that the Yankees are exactly setting the world on fire, though, as they are just 5-5 in their last 10 games. Their current 7-game road trip got off to a rocky start when they lost 3 of 4 to the A’s, but they did manage to bounce back with a win in Seattle in the first game in this series. This little run is all the more disappointing in that it comes on the heels of an impressive sweep of the Kansas City Royals. Masahiro Tanaka (2-1, 3.22 ERA) will start for the Yankees on Wednesday. Tanaka was having a solid start to the season before going down with an injury in April. The Mariners (24-27) are a lot like the Yankees of late in that they were unable to gather any momentum after sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays. They followed that up by dropping 3 of 4 to the Indians, and then losing the first game of this series to the Yankees. The Mariners now sit 7.5 games back of the division leading Astros, and are going to have their work cut out if they hope to cut into that gap. They do appear to be playing a little better as of late, but they simply cannot afford to go on extended losing streaks of any length. Taijuan Walker (2-5, 6.18 ERA) will take to the mound for Seattle, and will be looking to build on the quality start that he delivered in his last outing, where he went 8.0 innings of no-run ball. It is going to be interesting to see how Tanaka fares in his first start back after injury. If the Mariners can get to him early, it could be a long night, especially if Walker is dealing the heat like he did in his last start. I like the mariners to come away with the win in this one.
