MLB Odds & Preview for NLDS Game 2: Arizona at LA Dodgers

Written by on October 6, 2017

The National League Division Series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers continues on Saturday night from Chavez Ravine, as Rich Hill is set to start for the Dodgers against a Diamondbacks pitcher to be named closer to game time. The Diamondbacks emerged from the wild card game with a wild 11-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies and now look to take down a Dodger team that won 104 games — but that the Diamondbacks beat 11 times in 19 meetings during regular season play. Will the rest that the Dodgers got between Sunday’s regular season finale and the weekend division series pay dividends, or will the momentum that Arizona brings from the wild card win roll into this series for them? The MLB odds for this game aren’t out yet until after tonight’s Game 1.

Why should you bet on the Diamondbacks?

The Diamondbacks’ pitching staff remains somewhat up in the air, thanks to their use of both Zack Greinke and Robbie Ray, their top two starters, in the wild card game against Colorado. Arizona has elected to start Taijuan Walker in Game 1 on Friday night, so they could come back with Greinke or Ray in Game 2 on three days’ rest, as neither had a particularly heavy pitching load. It will also be important to pay attention to how much Arizona has to go to their bullpen again in Game 1, because a drained bullpen could play to the Dodgers’ favor, especially going into a Game 2 that does not offer a rest day. A lot of people are talking about those 104 wins that the Dodgers have piled up, and having five consecutive National League West championship trophies in the case is a nice touch. But the Dodgers have also failed to move on to claim the biggest prize of all — the Commissioner’s Trophy given to the World Series winner. They have the roster to win it, but the top seed in the playoffs often has a hard time putting away the opposition. Arizona finished 69-93 in 2016 — 24 games under .500. This year they finished 93-69 — a 48-game turnaround as far as win-loss differential goes. They reduced their runs permitted by over 200, and adding J.D. Martinez to their batting order gave Paul Goldschmidt some protection in the lineup. If they can tag the lefty Rich Hill early, they have a chance to win this game and go back to the desert with at least a split in the series’ first two games.

Why should you put your money on the Dodgers?

Rich Hill will take the mound for his fifth career postseason start. His home ERA (2.77) is significantly better than his numbers away from Dodger Stadium (4.06). However, the Dodgers have some daunting numbers to consider in this rivalry. In the 19 contests that they played, the Diamondbacks outscored the Dodgers, 99-71 and hit 32 home runs to the Dodgers’ 18. However, they have some impressive numbers of their own, as they won 57 of the 81 games that they played at home this season. Why should you put your money on the Dodgers in the MLB odds for game 2 of the NLDS? If you like the Dodgers, then you think that the top three pitchers in their rotation (Kershaw, Hill and Yu Darvish) can manage the Diamondback lineup, while their own bats find ways to challenge the Arizona pitching staff. You also think that the Dodgers can put past postseason failures behind them and take the challenge of moving to the National League Championship Series. If the Diamondbacks start Greinke or Ray in this game, I see them evening the series up — but pay attention to the starting pitchers before you wager.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

If the Diamondbacks put one of their top two pitchers in, I predict a 5-2 Diamondback win. — and a series that goes back to Arizona with the Diamondbacks holding the momentum.
