The Texas Rangers (6-4) are off to an uneven start, as they swept the Philadelphia Phillies on the first weekend of the season but have gone just 3-4 since then as they attempt to find chemistry with a lot of new faces and bring their impressive offense into alignment with new improvements on defense and on the pitching staff. Lefthander Andrew Heaney made a strong statement on Monday, striking out nine Kansas City Royals in a row to tie an American League record shared by Doug Fister and Tyler Alexander. Tuesday’s featured MLB betting matchup involves the San Diego Padres (6-5) visiting the New York Mets (6-5), with both teams a game out of first in their respective divisions. Don’t miss our breakdown of this prime-time meeting between potential playoff teams.

Projected Pitching Matchup: Ryan Weathers (0-0. 3.60 ERA) (SD) vs David Peterson (0-1, 6.00 ERA) (NY)
Why should you bet on the Padres?
Ryan Weathers pitched serviceably in his first start of 2023, throwing five innings of five-hit, two-run ball in a 5-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, striking out two and walking one. Weathers relies on the defense behind him to get outs and is generally economical with his pitches, so as the season goes by, his starts should last longer, but for now, Weathers will be handing the ball to the bullpen with at least three innings to go.
The San Diego offense has been impressive, as we saw on Sunday when the Padres pounded out 10 runs. Platooning Nelson Cruz and Matt Carpenter at DH has led to three home runs and 15 RBI, and Xander Bogaerts is raking in his new environment. If you like the Padres, you see that combination of adequate pitching and powerful offense doing damage against the Mets.
Why should you put your money on the Mets?
David Peterson makes his third start of the season on Tuesday night. His first start, in Miami, was solid, as he scattered eight hits, allowing just one run on a solo shot, striking out five while walking just one. The Mets’ offense did not show up, though, in a no-decision for Peterson that ended in a 2-1 loss. He started on Wednesday in Milwaukee and got shelled for five runs on five hits over four innings, striking out five but also walking five in a 7-6 loss.
Starting catcher Omar Narvaez remains iffy with a calf strain, so the team will see what top prospect Francisco Alvarez has to offer. He went 1 for 4 with an RBI in his debut on Sunday, but the Mets’ overall offense has been quiet, ranking 23rd in MLB with a .686 OPS. Other than Pete Alonso (5 HR, 11 RBI), many of the Mets are still waiting to break out.
Final Score and Prediction
Both of these teams are projected to make the postseason, but, as is often the case, things are still a little wobbly coming out of the gate. The Padres have the edge in this matchup when we look at the starting pitcher and the offense to this point, so I’m going to predict a final score of Padres 5, Mets 2.
