The Dodgers (9-5) came flying out of the gate to start the season, and even managed to put together an impressive 7-game winning streak. Their hot start was built upon an 8-1 record at home, but they have been unable to match their home performances on the road. They are in danger of being swept in their 3-game series on the road at San Francisco, and will have to find a way to become road warriors if they don’t want their solid opening to be pretty much meaningless. The Dodgers will send Zack Greinke (2-0, 1.83 ERA) to the mound on Friday, and that could well be very good news. Grienke has been solid in all 3 of his starts this season, and has only given up 4 runs over the 20.1 innings that he has pitched to date.
The San Diego Padres (10-6) got off to a slow start, going 1-3 in their first 4 games of the season. Since then, though, they have been solid, losing only 3 of their next 12 games. Their +23 run differential is tied for best in the National League, and they have certainly been flashing some power of late, cranking out 25 runs in their last 3 starts. The Padres actually opened the season on the road to the Dodgers, where they lost 2 of 3. Like the Dodgers, the Padres have been better at home than on the road, and will be looking to get a little revenge for that opening series loss. Andrew Cashner (1-2, 2.65 ERA) will get the ball for the Padres on Friday. Cashner has been steadily improving with each start, and was able to get his first win of the season against the Cubs last week.
