MLB Parlay Picks for the Coming Weekend (June 17-19)

Texas at St. Louis vs New York Yankees at Minnesota (Friday, June 17th)

The Rangers send 6-1 Cole Hamels to the hill, and he has a microscopic 1.94 ERA and a 4-0 record in his last six starts away from Arlington. The Cardinals will send out Michael Wacha, who only permitted a pair of runs in seven innings in his last start, but you have to like Hamels — and Rangers team that has won 10 of 13 in this one. The Yankees will start their ace, Masahiro Tanaka. Even though he got shelled for five runs in 6 ⅓ innings in his last outing, Tanaka has the benefit of an extra day’s rest. In his career, when he has that fifth day, his ERA is 2.92 in the next start, as opposed to his 3.44 career ERA on his normal four days. Also, the Twins will be sending out rookie Pat Dean to start. He did hold Boston to a run and three hits in 6 ⅓ innings, but rookies tend to leave pitches out over the plate at just the wrong time. I like Tanaka to outduel the youngster.

Pittsburgh at Chicago Cubs vs Atlanta at New York Mets (Saturday, June 18th)

The Cubs will send out 8-3 Jon Lester to pitch this one, and his 1.89 ERA is only getting little notice because of the terrific work that Jake Arrieta is doing in the Second City. He has won his last four starts, and he has not permitted a walk in the last three starts. In his last four starts, he has gone 30 ⅓ innings while permitting just two earned runs. He has two starts against the Pirates this year and has gone 1-1 with a frigid 0.73 ERA. The Pirates will start Jonathon Niese, who permitted eight runs on 11 hits and a pair of long balls in just 5 ⅓ innings in his last start against St. Louis. The Cubs saw him on May 3 and smacked him around for nine hits, six runs and five bases on balls. The New York Mets are starting Steven Matz in this game, and the odds will shift a little bit against them given his last three starts, in which he has permitted 10 runs over 16 ⅔ innings and taken a pair of losses. However, this is the perfect game for him to bounce back, with the 20-46 Braves in town. He is 3-0 in his three career starts against the Braves, featuring a 1.42 ERA. Even if Matz has a couple of hiccups, he has Aaron Blair on the hill for the Braves. He has permitted six or more runs in three of his last five outings. Blair has a terrific fastball, but he hasn’t been able to place it where he wants, and he’s been paying the price as a result.
