The Colorado Rockies (45-68) are toiling in the basement of the National League West, 21 ½ games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (66-46). The Rockies’ run differential (-165) is 285 below that of the Dodgers (+120). The Rockies did win their most recent game, though, beating the Milwaukee Brewers on the road, 7-3, in 10 innings. The tenth inning featured four runs for Colorado on just one hit – a bunt single by rookie Brenton Doyle, who ended up loading the bases. The Brewers issued three walks with the bases loaded and heard scorn from their fans as the NL Central leaders lost to one of the worst teams in baseball. Can the Rockies mount any upsets in Chavez Ravine? Check out our MLB betting picks for each of the four games in the Dodgers-Rockies series this weekend.

Ty Blach Rockies vs Undecided Dodgers
When: Thursday, August 10, 10:10 pm ET
Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
Live Stream: MLB.tv
Projected Pitching Matchup: Ty Blach (1-1, 4.85 ERA) (COL) vs Undecided (LA)
Ty Blach makes his third start of 2023 after starting the season in the bullpen. He struggled mightily to start the season and was sent down to Triple-A on April 28. He came back up on July 1 and had two scoreless relief outings against Detroit and Miami. He got the start on July 30 against Oakland, throwing five scoreless innings and scattering three hits and a walk, striking out two, in a 2-0 win that was his first victory as a starter since 2019. Against St. Louis on Saturday, he only made it 4 ⅔ innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out two and issuing a walk and permitting a home run in a 6-2 loss. Even though the Dodgers will either use a spot starter or a long relief committee, it’s hard to see Blach lasting long enough to get the win. Dodgers to win.

Austin Gomber Rockies vs Lance Lynn Dodgers
When: Friday, August 11, 10:10 pm ET
Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
Live Stream: MLB.tv
Projected Pitching Matchup: Austin Gomber (9-8, 5.40 ERA) (COL) vs Lance Lynn (8-9, 6.11 ERA) (LA)
Since July 19, Austin Gomber’s ERA has dropped from 6.18 to 5.40, even though he only has one victory to show for his work. Against Washington, San Diego and St. Louis, he has thrown 18 combined innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits, striking out 12 while walking five. He held the Cardinals scoreless for six innings on Sunday in a 1-0 win. The Padres and Cardinals both have decent offenses, so Gomber’s ability to shut down those bats bodes well for the Rockies.
Lance Lynn came to the Dodgers from the White Sox at the trade deadline, and the move has rejuvenated his game a bit. In his two starts with Los Angeles, he has a pair of wins against Oakland and San Diego. He has thrown 13 combined innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits (including four home runs). Three of those home runs came against Oakland – all solo shots, fortunately. If Lynn keeps leaving the ball out over the plate, the Rockies should get some good swings. Rockies to win.

Peter Lambert Rockies vs Tony Gonsolin Dodgers
When: Saturday, August 12, 9:10 pm ET
Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
Live Stream: MLB.tv
Projected Pitching Matchup: Peter Lambert (2-3, 5.57 ERA) (COL) vs Tony Gonsolin (7-4, 4.42 ERA) (LA)
Peter Lambert is another Colorado pitcher who has moved from the bullpen to the rotation. His move to the rotation started well as he threw 11 innings combined against Miami and Washington, allowing one unearned run on six hits. Since the calendar turned to August, though, things have gotten rough, as he has allowed nine earned runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking five in just eight combined innings in losses to San Diego and Milwaukee.
Tony Gonsolin has been fairly easy to hit, particularly since mid-June. Since June 18, he has started nine games, and he has allowed four or more earned runs in seven of those starts. This includes his start on Monday in San Diego, where he allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk, striking out three, over six innings. He did benefit from big-time offensive support as the Dodgers won, 13-7, and he should get plenty of runs this time as well. Dodgers to win.
Bet on the Rockies vs Dodgers!
Kyle Freeland Rockies vs Julio Urias Dodgers
When: Sunday, August 13, 4:10 pm ET
Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
Live Stream: MLB.tv
Projected Pitching Matchup: Kyle Freeland (4-12, 4.84 ERA) (COL) vs Julio Urias (9-6, 4.39 ERA) (LA)
Kyle Freeland eats up innings, finishing the sixth inning in four of his last five starts, but he also gives up runs; in his last five starts, he has given up three or more runs four times. He doesn’t walk a lot of hitters, issuing only six free passes in his last 28 ⅔ innings, but he also got skipped in mid-July to help deal with fatigue.
Julio Urias has not permitted a run yet in August, holding Oakland and Arizona scoreless over 11 combined innings and dropping his ERA from 4.98 to 4.39. He will give up the big outing now and then, but day games tend to feature less offense, and Urias’ tendency to give up the long ball has not been an issue since May. Dodgers to win.
