Saturday’s Expert MLB Betting Picks & Previews – August 12th

Written by on August 11, 2017

As we head into the another weekend of MLB betting action, it looks like some of the divisional races in Major League Baseball are starting to spread out. The New York Yankees added two starting pitchers, but it’s Boston that’s moved ahead in the AL East by 4 ½ games, winning nine of their last ten. Cleveland still has a 3 ½-game lead in the AL Central despite dropping seven of ten — and it would take something like time travel for the Houston Astros to fall out of the division lead in the AL West. In the senior circuit, the Cubs lead the Cardinals by just a game, but the Washington Nationals lead the East by 15 games, and the Los Angeles Dodgers lead the NL West by 16 games — despite the fact that they would be 14 games ahead of the Nationals right now — that’s how well the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks are still playing. Now that we have brief idea of the games we’re looking at, let’s check out the latest MLB odds & lines for these Saturday matchups.

Saturday’s Expert MLB Betting Picks & Previews – August 12th

Chicago Cubs at Arizona (8:10pm ET, FSAZ, WGN)

Pitching Matchup: Jon Lester (8-6, 3.97 ERA) (CHI) vs Patrick Corbin (8-11, 4.76 ERA) (ARI) Jon Lester has had some hard luck in his outings this season; his last time out, he limited Washington to three runs in 6 ⅔ innings — but did not get the decision. He has brought his season ERA below 4.00 by putting together a five-start streak with a 3.03 ERA since the All-Star Game. Paul Goldschmidt (.625, 1 HR, 4 RBI) and A.J. Pollock (.417) have had success against Lester in their careers, but for the most part, Lester has managed to pitch well against one of the hotter teams in the National League. The Diamondbacks will start Patrick Corbin. His first two starts in the month of August have been rough, as he has permitted 14 runs combined in those games. Four of them were unearned, but that’s still a big jolt to his ERA. He is fanning hitters, though — in a loss on August 6, he struck out 10 men in six innings against San Francisco. In the Cubs’ lineup, Ian Happ (2-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI) and Anthony Rizzo (.333, 1 HR, 3 RBI) have had some success against Corbin, but none of the Cubs have faced him more than six times. Both the Cubs and the Diamondbacks have been scuffling around the .500 mark lately, and I see Arizona taking this game at home.

Baltimore at Oakland (9:05pm ET, NSCA, MAS2)

Pitching Matchup: Dylan Bundy (11-8, 4.15 ERA) (BAL) vs Sean Manaea (8-6, 4.15 ERA) (OAK) The A’s were very pleased with the July that Sean Manaea posted, as he finished seven or more innings in four of his five outings. However, he has hit a wall since then, as he has failed to complete four innings in either of his last two starts, permitting a dozen runs combined in just 6 ⅓ total innings. The defense hasn’t helped, as five of those runs have been unearned, but Manaea is not making the same pitches that he was in July. Only Tim Beckham (.167) and Ruben Tejada (.000, 0-2) have ever faced Manaea, which should help him the first time or two through the order. Are the Orioles a safe bet for this Saturday? Baltimore got a terrific start out of Dylan Bundy in his last outing, as he limited the Angels to just a pair of runs on five hits with no walks, fanning 10 batters in seven innings. None of the Oakland batters have more than one at-bat against Bundy — and Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis are the only A’s with at-bats against him. The Orioles have the superior offensive lineup, so in a battle of new pitchers (to the opposition) I see the Orioles winning.

San Diego at L.A. Dodgers (9:10pm ET, FSSD, SNLA)

Pitching Matchup: Jhoulys Chacin (11-8, 4.15 ERA) (SD) vs Hyun-Jin Ryu (4-6, 3.53 ERA) (LA) Jhoulys Chacin had been on a roll of a couple months and the real bright spot in the Padres’ rotation. However, the Cincinnati Reds tagged him for five runs in six innings on Monday. The Dodgers knocked him around for nine runs on Opening Day, but he has held them to a single run over his last two starts against them, throwing a combined 10 ⅓ innings in the process. Justin Turner (.385, 2 RBI) and Yasiel Puig (.353, 1 RBI) have had the most luck against Chacin in the past. Hyun-Jin Ryu put together a real gem his last time out, throwing seven shutout innings and permitting just a single hit, fanning eight and walking none. He has a streak of 15 straight shutout innings going, and he has posted a 2-0 record and a 2.08 ERA in his last six starts. Despite being in the same division, Ryu has only faced to of the Padres’ starters, which should give him an edge. Add that red-hot Dodger lineup to the mix, and give me L.A. to win.
