The Astros (83-74) are in the middle of a dogfight, but they may yet benefit from how the schedule has played out. After this one, they will head to Arizona for 3 games, which will be taking place at the same time as the Rangers and Angels are squaring off. Those two may end up cannibalizing each other and allowing the Astros to sneak in and seize the division crown. That said, as easy as the Houston schedule appears, they still have to win the games that they are still to play. They go things off to a good start with a 3-2 win in the opening game, which takes them to 3 straight victories after knocking off the Rangers in back to back outings. They are still a game and a half back of Texas in the division, and only a game up on the Angels for the final Wild Card spot. This looks like being a huge week for all involved. Scott Kazmir (7-11, 2.96 ERA) is going to have to find a way to bounce back after getting roughed up by Texas in his last start.
The Mariners (74-83) saw their offense spring to life in the second half of the season, but the runs appear to have once again dried up coming down the stretch. Seattle has now lost 6 consecutive games, and averaged slightly less than 3 runs per game during that run. Nelson Cruz has certainly help up his end of the bargain, and has proven that the huge contract he received was in fact not a waste of money. The Mariners have had their moments this season, but there is still going to be a lot of disappointed fans out there, as this was a team that many expected to pose a legitimate playoff challenge. At time of writing, the Mariners had yet to decide on which pitcher would take the mound for this one.
