The Braves (9-9) were one of the surprise teams in the league in the opening couple of weeks, but reality has quickly set on for Freddy Gonzalez’s crew. The pitching has not been great of late, the bats have gone as cold as everyone expected they would be, and the Braves are making some costly errors out in the field. The Braves will be happy to get back home after a pretty disastrous 9-game road trip that saw them go 3-6. They will feel a bit better about themselves if they can take this series and close out the opening month of the season with a winning record. The Tuesday game will see Julio Teheran (2-1, 4.64 ERA) on the mound for the home team. The Braves have won 3 of Teheran’s 4 starts, but couldn’t do much in his last outing, where he didn’t have the control he needed.
To say that what is happening with the Nationals (7-12) this season is surprising is putting things a little too mildly. Given the quality of their starting rotation, the general consensus was that they would simply walk away with the division en route to a spot in the World Series. The reality has not been good for Washington, though. To put things in perspective, this is the first time that they have lost 5 games in a row since the All-Star Break way back in 2013. It is, of course, far too early to count them out just yet, but they are in serious need of a wake-up call, especially with the Mets building up a huge lead atop the division. There is some doubt as to who will get the start for Washington on Tuesday. Max Scherzer is scheduled, but his injured thumb might keep him out.
