Thursday’s Top MLB Betting Matchups and Picks

Miami Marlins at St. Louis Cardinals

When: Thursday, July 6th. 2:45 PM ET Where: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri TV: FS-F (Miami) / FS-M (St. Louis) Radio: 940 AM WINZ (Miami) / KMOX 1120 (St. Louis) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Tom Koehler (1-3, 8.33 ERA) (MIA) vs Michael Wacha (5-3, 4.16 ERA) (STL) Tom Koehler returned to the bigs last week, making his first start for the Marlins since May 16, and things did not go well. He threw 50 pitches in the second inning aloe — and he didn’t escape the frame. He permitted seven runs (three earned) on six hits and a pair of walks. For the Cardinals, Tommy Pham (.600 lifetime average), Stephen Piscotty (.400, 2 RBI), Randal Grichuk (.375, 1 RBI) and Jedd Gyorko (.444, 3 RBI) have all hit Koehler well in the past. Michael Wacha had five dreadful starts over the end of May and the first two thirds of June, putting up an 8.86 ERA over that stretch. However, his last two starts have both gone six solid innings, and he fanned nine his last time out. Only Martin Prado (.364, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and Giancarlo Stanton (.400) have hit Wacha well in their careers. I like the Cardinals to win this seris finale.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Philadelphia Phillies

When: Thursday, July 6th. 6:05pm ET Where: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania TV: ROOTPIT (Pittsburgh) / CSN-P (Philadelphia) Radio: KDKA-FM 93.7 (Pittsburgh) / 94 WIP (Philadelphia) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Chad Kuhl (2-6, 5.26 ERA) (PIT) vs Jeremy Hellickson (5-5, 4.48 ERA) (PHI) Kuhl has been extremely up and down this season, but his last start on Saturday against the San Francisco Giants was way up, as he pitched five-plus innings before permitting his first hit. Overall, he lasted six innings with just one run on two hits, giving him his first quality start in over two months. Jeremy Hellickson is one of the Phillies’ big trade assets right now, with that July 31 non-waiver trade deadline coming up. He will go into free agency after this season, but if he wants to go to a contender now, he needs to put up some big numbers on Thursday night. He has a plus fastball but tends to leave it over the fat part of the plate, and pitching for a team that provides just about zero run support may have drained his morale a bit. Even so, I like him to rebound — and for Kuhl to show some more of that inconsistency. Give me the Phillies at home in this one. The Pirates are the MLB betting favorite agains the Phillies on Thursday.

San Diego Padres at Cleveland Indians

When: Thursday, July 6th. 7:10pm Et Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland TV: FSSD (San Diego) / SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland) Radio: XEMO 860 (San Diego) / WTAM 1100 (Cleveland) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Betting Odds: TBA Pitching Matchup: Dinelson Lamet (3-2, 5.35 ERA) (SD) vs Josh Tomlin (4-9, 6.17 ERA) (CLE) The Indians have climbed back into first place in the American League Central, but Josh Tomlin has not been one of the reasons for their resurgence. His last six starts have produced a 1-3 record with a 6.90 ERA, and he is leaving some pitches way out over the plate, as opposing batters have swatted nine long balls over that stretch. His last start, against Detroit, featured four runs on eight hits, and a pair of dingers. The Padres send rookie Dinelson Lamet to the hill. He benefits from the fact that the Indians have never faced him, and he has put together three straight quality starts to begin his career.  In his last start, he struck out eight against Atlanta, throwing seven scoreless innings. The Padres are definitely in the lower tier of MLB as far as offense goes, but I see Lamet getting the win here. Tomlin will give up too many big hits, and the Padres will take advantage.
